Playstation 3 in 2003!?!?!

I was over at slashdot and saw this link from bloomberg that says the PS3 may be out this year! I don't know the truth to this but it seems a little unlikely considering all that goes into processor design. A few developers have said they've had access to next generation technology already (EA and Rockstar come to mind) but this is the first "public" revelation I've heard about it.

I guess they could introduce it and not see any backlash if it was still backwards compatibel with the PS2. Or they could introduce it at a pretty high price point so only early adopters got on board to begin with. Madness I tell you.

EDIT: I guess Sony is denying the whole thing. Who knows what the truth is....

The last rumor I heard was that Sony would be revealing some info about the PS3 at E3 with at Japanese release in late 2004 and an American release in early 2005. Sony has talked about moving the release date up, so a mid 2004 release in Japan might happen, but anything earlier than that would be a huge rush on technology.

Sony should do what Microsoft did, wait until all the specs for the next xbox are released, then they can go and double it.

Hmm...I wonder if this would work. Release PS2 2 years early into the industry-standard 5 year cycle. Customers might backlash, or they might eat it up.

Not at this time, but it might happen when they reach PS2's limit for graphics and power. (but of course by then Sony will surprise us by releasing PS3)

I don't see this happening. Maybe they plan to make an announcement this year, but there's no way the PS3 is coming out mid-2003. No developer kits have been distributed so no one knows anything about the hardware in terms of developing for it. Who wants a system with no games? You thought the lack of PS2 games at it's launch was bad...

I can't see sony doing this so soon. they should really wait a till they see what Xbox can produce in it's later series of games and build from future technology to improve on graphics so it would actually be a significat jump in game play/graphics.

If anybody thinks that Xbox or Gamecube will even come CLOSE to Sony in this generation, I have a bridge to sell you.

They might do a late 2004 release to keep Microsoft and Nintendo from getting a jump on them, but thats the earliest.

At the risk of hi-jacking my own thread, here's some more PS3 rumblings..... Looks like the hype machine has started to plant some seeds already.

What a bunch of crap. It all sounds great on paper, but i really don't want my PS3 to cost 8 billion dollars. Reminds me of the "boxless" PS3 concept, which is total crap too. To quote someone from that discussion thread "It'll be a box"

As for PS3 in 2003... Someone was severely misquoted.

I love that every year there's the same crap rehashed back and forth, yet people choose to believe it. The PS3 is not coming out for at least 2 more years, people.

Yeah but you take the same crap then add some MSG and you have a whole new dish served nice and warm for everyone to eat

Late 2004 in Japan early 2005 for the US market. XBox will release ready or not the same day here in the US no matter what it costs.

Exactly.

Same thing happened while the original PS was still relatively young. There was all this talk about its successor and how it was going to be released "soon".

Sony denies PS3 rumors.

"These reports are false. Decisions regarding the name, specifications, pricing and launch date of our next console haven't even been finalized yet. These reports have suggested we plan to incorporate CELL processor technology into our next console as early as next year - but its still in the developmental stage."

Yeah, PS2 rocks (LOL).
Sorry, Xbox surpasses PS2 in everyway. But hey, your getting Splinter Cell for PS2, right?

It's all about who launches first, not necessarily Specs. Whomever comes out 6-12 months ahead of the next Next Gen Console will have the advantage. XBOX may be more powerful, but PS2 sales are strong becauseit had 12+ months to prep the market. Just my Opinion.

What about DC though? It had a year head start on PS2. I guess people always say either bootlegging and/or Sega fans turning their back.

I bet MS and Sony launch at nearly the same time though. Neither will let the either get the head start.

Specs is just one side of the coin the other is Games you can have a console that can do everything but it's the game publishers that Sony and MS they have to convince to make games for that console and it has to be affordable to the general public my two cents.
