I've decided to get my mom a decent big screen tv for Mothers Day. I'm looking to spend no more than 1500$. She watches a lot of television, loves sports, and watches the ocassional dvd. She's been talking about getting a big screen tv for years and figured I'd suprise her with one in time for baseball season.

The problem is I'm pretty lost. There are so many brands and options and upgrades possible I have no idea what to get. I'd like to go with something between 40" and 50".

Any help? Thanks.

If at all possible, try to get a Mitsubishi, maybe 46" or so. They make the best rptv's, esp. in the lower price ranges. And I think the 4:3 sets are cheaper and appropriate based on her viewing habits.

How about reliability on rptv's? Or the amount of tweaking you have to do? I seem to keep reading that rptv's are not as reliable as tube sets and that you need to be willing to do a lot of tweaking to get the set picture to look good.

My mom is not a tech savvy kind of person, I really want something that she can just plug in and not have to worry about. I know there will be some initial setting up, which I will try to do for her, but is something that will need to be done on a regular basis?

You can tweak the pic with an Avia disc. Main thing is to turn the contrast way down from the factory settings (100%!). The picture should look great out of the box (see thread aboveabout the 48" Mitsus) and they really don't need much tweaking at all. Just that lots of folks like to get things *perfect*. The picture will look really really good to great out of the box. A bit of tweaking an dit will look awesome. And once it's broken in (100 hrs or so) you won't even need to adjus tthings often, say once a year or so, to keep it looking great. The basic 64-pt. convergence is the main adjustment, and it is easily accessed and done using just the remote.
