I love pho (Vietnamese noodles). I eat pho at least once a week, usually twice a week. Any other pho lovers out there?

My favorite places are:
Pho Hanh Vietnamese Restaurant in Temple City, CA
Pho 999 in Reseda, CA
Pho Nguyen Hue in Westminster, CA

I've only had Vietnamese food once with a Vietnamese friend that flew in from CA a couple years ago over the Xmas holidays. For some reason Vietnamese food just didn't do much for me.

Yeah, none of them in Champaign are really any good. I used to live right off 5th and University, so I went to that pho place on University a lot (near Durst Cycle). Wasn't that great, but 30 second drive from my home so ...

Pho is like pizza, in that even bad pho is still pretty good pho.

Pho is excellent. It has been so long though since I have basked in the goodness that is pho. Fall of 2001 I believe. Yes, I am a sad human being.

There are some great Pho places next to the University of Washington in Seattle.

I like pho. Lots of pho places in Portland, at least a dozen. The best if Pho Van though. Gotta love the pho.

If you haven't had the pho, try the pho. You don't understand the pho until you've had it. For years I drover around and saw signs proclaiming, "Beef Noodle Soup" and thought they must be crazy. I kept picturing Campbells type of soup and the concept was totally lost on me.

El Monte ... that's on the way to/from work for me. I live just north of Rosemead. I take Rosemead Blvd south past the I-10 to CA-60 East. I know Garvey, because the light on Rosemead is ALWAYS red when I hit Garvey. Okay, it's been green like once in the past 4 months. And the green time is just about equal for Rosemead as it is for Garvey.

Anyway, thanks. I'll check it out one of these days.

I was checking out http://www.phohoa.com and noticed they have opened one up in Chicago!

In Atlanta just go to Buford highway and hit a golf ball. Chances are it will land next to a pho shop.

Pho is yummy and good, but nothing beats French-Vietnamese cuisine. Seriously. It's even yummier and gooder than plain ol' noodle soup.

By the way, we have the most awesome Pho houses in San Jose. In fact, San Jose has been called Vietnam West in the past.

Of course, I STILL want to leave. What the heck? I know how to make my own Pho. Heavy on the Coriander, please.

I just went and had some Pho yesterday.

Excellent stuff.

Though, it is kind of sad, as the Pho place only had me and one other lady with her kid in it, and the lady left after I was there for about 5 mins, so I was the only one eating there for like 45 minutes. And this was during the typical "lunch hour".

I hope they don't go under.

actually, you can buy the items from asian supermarkets. if you had time, you would cook beef for a few hours so you get some good soup. if not, then you can buy a packet and pour it into the water (kinda like the chicken bouillon cubes). then, you can buy the rice stick (i prefer the kind that says "banh pho" on it, since that's the one made for pho. also, the fresh one is best, but it's more expensive). then, you can buy some thinly sliced beef along with some onions and some green onions. put the noodles in a bowl along with the beef and onions and then pour on the boiling soup.

add some lemon, bean sprouts, and some of the "mints".

Well, I guess I will throw out a suggestion if you're in the Seattle area.

Thanh Brothers on 42nd & University has excellent pho at college student prices. The pho is authentic, and so is the complimentary French-occupation influenced creme puff you get with the soup.

Of course, no place is better or more authentic in Seattle than my mom's house, but you all wouldn't fit in the kitchen there.

I have eaten at Thanh Brothers also, and would also recommend it.

They have a little sign in the window: "Free Dessert"

Thanks for the advice. I had actually been looking at a few recipes on the web, but they all called for several pounds of beef bones to make the broth, which are supposed to cook for several hours. Seems like a lot of effort, compared to driving a couple miles and getting it almost immediately. I think I might have to make it myself though at least once.

you can also use oxtail. you could just start cooking the soup, then watch a movie or two, and then it's done :)

Heck yeah. You're definitely right about that. It wouldn't be Pho without the red rooster chile sauce or the duck sauce (I think on the bottle Hoisin mentions it is often used in Peking Duck).

There's a Pho restaurant I go to in Koreatown (Los Angeles) that is pretty great. I tend to order the bowl with all the freaky stuff in it (tripe, beef tendon, & steak). It weirded me out eating that stuff at first, but now I'm a big fan.

Well, I guess I will throw out a suggestion if you're in the Seattle area.

Thanh Brothers on 42nd & University has excellent pho at college student prices. The pho is authentic, and so is the complimentary French-occupation influenced creme puff you get with the soup.

can you suggest any places south of seattle? I'm out in the Auburn area and don't want to have to go all the way up to the U-Dist just to get some pho :(

There is a Pho place in Auburn on Auburn Way N. That is the one I have been going to lately, and they have pretty good pho (in my opinion, though I'm not exactly an expert). It is located between 28th ST NE and 30th ST NE on the right side of the road along with few other shops (such as a pool hall/java shop).

I'm not sure of the exact address, but I have a menu out in my car. If I remember to bring it in tomorrow I'll post the name and address of the place.

oh man, you made my day.

you also just made me really, really hungry.

I'm gonna have to go there tomorrow - I'll drive around until I find it. I know where that pool hall is on Auburn Way N., so I think I'll be able to find it.

If ya know where the pool hall is then it shouldn't be a problem at all.

I was pondering getting some Pho there tomorrow, as it is just a little ways off the path on my way home. The pho itch has been rather powerful lately.

need my fix! *crack crack*

found the place in Auburn today, it was OK. thanks for the rec.

When I was living down in LA my favorite pho place was in Pomona on Indian Hill right by the Food 4 Less. I don't remember the name of the place, but it was behind a place called "Shrimp Boat." It's worth eating at if you're in Pomona - best pho I've had.

Glad you were able to find it.

So your appraisal of it is about medium on the taste scale? Hmm...I might have to try the one on East Hill one of these days.

One of my favorite local spots is Pho Van on El Cajon in San Diego. It is very close to the 15. Hole in the wall place but the phood is great. I might have to stop in for dinner tonight and order a 67.

Where is this Pho Bang! place located?
Pho Bang ($10 - $20) 1702 W. Camelback Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85015-3347 602/433-9440

Never been to the place on rural and university... now i kinda want to though.

Mmmmmm.....pho. Too bad it's hot as all get out today, or I'd definitely be up for some. Summertime hot weather = salad, garlic bread and strawberries for dessert (typical meal because it's too hot for hot food).

If anyone knows of great (I've been to several "ok") pho places in the bay area of ca (I know there has to be several, I just haven't found them) please share. :)

Strange, I had me some Phở today probably around the time Weargle revived this thread.

Fun Pho Fact: Phở is pronounced "phir" in english.

At least thats what some website says. And here I've been ordering by saying "foe" all these years.

if you like pho, you might also like bun bo hue which is also a noodle type soup dish.

or, why not eat some other vietnamese food like spring rolls or bun (verimicelli(sp?))? or have some fried spring rolls with bun. those usually appeal to a wide range of people.

or, my favorite, banh cuon (rice rolls) with gio (meat rolls).

Well, I just grabbed it from a website so you would obviously be a more authoritative source. To Peddy's credit another site said it's pronounced "fuh". So how do you pronounce it?

i think "fuh" is pretty close. say it like you're asking a question, and you'll be closer. the "?" symbol over the "o" is the symbol for question, so say "fuh" like a question, and you'll be closer.

There's Pho places all over here, and I still haven't tried it. I'll have to check it ou sometime, but since I have no idea what it tastes like, it's hard to get in the mood.

I've been going to Pho Republic (http://www.asianfoodconcepts.com/) lately since it's close to where I live. The food is pretty good. I really like the spring rolls and the fried spring rolls.

I might have to check one of these places out when I go to ComiCon in a couple of weeks and crash at my friend's place on Fletcher Parkway.

Bun Bo Hue sounds good:
"Lemon grass flavor soup is served piping hot and is a spicy combination of beef shank, pork hocks, lemon grass and herbs. A specialty of central Vietnam. Try it!"

The banh cuon (rice rolls) with gio (meat rolls) sounds good too.

Darn you all for resurrecting this thread. Now my mouth is watering and I have to go to bed soon. :(

When I'm not having pho, I order the bun (vermicelli) bowl with a pork. Sometimes I add this shrimp-cake thing or fried spring rolls to it. I also always order iced coffee which drips through the filter thingee that sits above your glass. The meal just doesn't seem complete without it.

Mmmmmm...spring rolls - love them fried or not. Think I'm going to have to get vietnamese food tonight. :) Thanks for the recommendations - I've never tried bun bo hue or banh cuon with gio. I do love chicken breast on cold vermicelli noodles with fish sauce - don't know what it's called but I love it. The only problem is that lots of places use dark meat chicken and I only like white meat.

If you're ever in the South Bay, visit these places for wonderful Pho:

San Jose:
Pho Y
Pho Hoa
Pho #1

Santa Clara:
Pho Hoa

Stay away from Pho Thanh Long (in Santa Clara). Not good!

Also, Bun Bo Hue is my favorite next to Pho. There is a very good restaurant that serves specifically Bun Bo Hue on Mclaughlin Rd. in San Jose

Good place. My favorite is La Cai Mì Gia near Mesa College (used to go there when I was a starving student). Others to mention are the ones on linda vista road near Ulrich. Can't recall the names, but used to lunch with the folks @ DPW. Tastes like menudo if you ask me. My wife doesn't like Pho. I pity thee...
