Even though they may be quality product are there any games that others rave about that you cant stomach?
I submit the following:
MGS2 I have not been able to get into this game at all. I cant stand the camera. Too much storytelling as well.
Final Fantasy anything. Does not even feel like a game to me. I just occasionally press a button while the game walks, talks and fights.
Super Mario Sunshine. I loved Mario 64, but the little island theme and weird characters in SMS made this a quick trade in for me.
Any others?

ummm....can't think of any no.
*edit*
Actually yes I did think of one, Rayman. Everyone seems to love this game but I really don't see why it is that great. The first one was just an average platformer with very loose controls. I really don't understand the appeal of this game.

I didn't hate any of these, but I certainly wouldn't have rated them as highly as most people did: (To be fair, I'll list one from each console)
Panzer Dragoon Orta - No idea how this got such high scores; pretty game, but no depth.
Metroid Prime - Pretty good, but not as good as the reviews gave it; looked nice, control was good, world was well-developed; just wan't very fun to me.
Final Fantasy X - Mostly cutscenes and linear gameplay; boring.

I'll have to agree with the Final Fnatasy games - I've tried to play a few of them but just can't get into it...
I also really can't stand the Super Smash Brothers games - I like the fighting genre and I think the idea of fighting with the Nintendo characters is great but for some reason I just can't stand those games.

02-26-03, 07:57 PM
Collection based platformers are boring as hell to me, and yet continually get high ratings (Mario 64 kind of started it, and that game too was terrible imho... along with the other N64 collection based games - Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie come to mind, GC ones include Star Fox Adventures and Super Mario Sunshine.. oddly enough tho - I did like Jak and Daxter.)
Didn't like Grand Theft Auto III, but did enjoy Vice City thoroughly.
Gran Turismo is, in my opinion, the most overrated series out there, a truly snore-enducing game.
The original Resident Evil lacked anything that I could consider even remotely interesting, the remake has its moments though.
Perfect Dark sucked.
Skies of Arcadia is ****ing terrible and very highly rated.
TimeSplitters 2 - bought based on the rave reviews, sold about 2 weeks later.
And while this will make me sound more anti-nintendo than I already sound (Nintendo is prolly my favorite game company out there and the GC is currently my favorite system, I own all 3), I really hate Smash Bros Melee... my friends love it like you wouldn't believe - I play it and just get bored (multiplayer.)
...and while I don't hate the game, I think River City Ransom is kinda overrated.

I just don't seem to "get" the appeal of "mature" games like Grand Theft Auto, the numerous military or tactical games coming out, stuff like Metal Gear Solid 2 and Splinter Cell.. I can probably say that I honestly hate 90% of the PS2 and Xbox's top lists, maybe more.. for some reason the games I enjoy the most these days seem to be crapped on.. Metal Gear Solid 2 - the gameplay was nice, but the story was so convoluted it ruined the experience for me. I did get a few good laughs out of it, but by the end I was more than ready for it to be over.
Smash Brothers Melee - Awful.
Any Star Wars pilot game since Shadows of the Empire - Guh, boring.
Timesplitters 2 - Worst... controls... ever. Combine that with crappy graphics, ameture level design and textures and AI that makes Serious Sam look like online play.
Metroid Prime - while I didn't hate it, I didn't really find enough to keep my interest. I also somewhat resent all the kudos it gets for being the first this or first that. Gameplay-wise, it presented nothing new with regard to the lock on target system... Half-Life for the PS2 had it. Claims that it invented the FPA genre are silly since at least half a dozen FPS games for the PC had already been there done that. I did find the puzzle aspects that came about from the abilities of your character to be somewhat innovative to the FPS genre though and the level design was decent.
Final Fantasy series - Always hated the Console version of RPGs with turn-based combat and I really hated the fact that you move this duplo version of your character around and only get to really see what he/she looks like in cut-scene movies. Final Fantasy X was able to grab me for a week though with the storyline.
GTA - Vice City - I can't believe the public gobbled up this half-finished piece of buggy garbage. GTA3 was pure genius and this semi-sequel had potential oozing from the seams... however, they simply didn't spend enough time on it and it shows. The soundtrack also disappointed a little knowing what songs they didn't include from the library they had available. Hopefully they spend more time on GTA4.
Mario Kart - Oh god, why? Am I 4 years old? I mean, I'm not so closed minded that I couldn't enjoy a game like this but I never saw what was so special about how this game handled to make it so popular... there are plenty of racers out there that are more fun and more realistic (which is what I prefer and to each his own etc). Best I could figure was that this is so popular because exclusive or first party racers are slim pickins on Nintendo systems compared to the competition.
No Xbox titles that I can think of because the games I didn't like are games that were pretty unpopular anyway not to mention that there's only a handful of games on the Xbox that got really high ratings. Halo is one that I liked but I wouldn't rank it in my top 5 FPS of all time or anything. The levels were too repetitive. What made it so cool was the controls - perfect transition for someone coming from a mouse/keyboard setup. Panzer Dragoon Orta didn't really light my fire I guess, but it's pretty. :/ Poor Sega. Xbox needs to come out with some highly rated games. Oh wait - thought of one. :)
Wreckless Yakuza Missions (xbox) - Complete crap. Terrible game. High potential with almost no payoff.
Goldeneye - PC FPS games were years ahead of this pile of crap yet everyone goes gaga over it like it invented the genre.
Eternal Darkness - lame.
Street Fighter anything
Zelda anything
Mario anything except original Donkey Kong and Mario Sunshine
Golf anything except for Outlaw Golf - one of the best games ever.
Football anything
Baseball anything
Hockey anything
Warcraft
Starcraft
Diablo
Bauldar's Gate
Dungeons and Dragons anything

I don't like "stealth" games like MGS or Splinter Cell. To paraphrase another poster, they feel more like work than fun. Exception: Thief.
I've never gotten into sports games, although they are wildly popular. Then again, I'm not into real life sports either. Exception: Summer Games by Epyx. That game was a blast!
I don't like much in the RTS genre. I real try to give it a chance, but every new game doesn't seem any more advanced than the original Warcraft. Exception: Sacrifice.
I'm not big on fighting games. It's just not my bag, baby. Exceptions: Virtua Fighter 2 and Super Smash Brothers Melee.
Those dancing and rhythm games. Push the joystick in the direction of the arrow. Oh boy! Exception: None.

Without a doubt, Total Annihilation.
I bought that game from the bargain bin a few years ago. I played it for about 4 hours before deciding that it was the most boring RTS-type game I had ever played. I got more enjoyment out of Earth 2150 than I did from that turd.
I cannot see any appeal at all, and people talk about it like it was the second coming. Bleah.
And I'll throw another vote in for Super Smash Bros. Melee. Button-mashing crap.
I do need to say one thing about Goldeneye, totally from my perspective. My college roommates and I loved the game because we each had a controller and it was very easy for the four of us to pick up and play. At that time there was only one computer in the apartment, so the better FPS's that were being done on the PC wern't available to us.
With the element of stealth, the unlockables, the various mission objectives, the gadgets and the weapons, the outstanding multiplayer, it was a very complete package.
Just my opinion of course.

I only like certain types of games (sports, racing, fighting, adventure, shooters) and don't like platformers, rpgs, etc.
The topic was HIGHLY Rated games you hate. Nintendo makes highly rated games in the genres I don't like. I hate platformers like Crash, Spyro, and Rayman, but those games are not as highly rated as Mario and the topic was highly rated games you hate not average games you hate.

It's not supposed to be a realisitic racer, obviously (I mean come on.. Mario is driving around in a go-kart.. how can it be realistic). The fun part is 2-4 player battles.
Anyway.. I've got one or two more to add.
Eternal Darkness.. although I don't hate it, and it had some good moments.. overall it wasn't a good game. Too short and too easy and too repetitive.
Every turn-based fighting RPG. Most RPG's for that matter. I don't see a game in most RPGs.. just a story and some statistics for your character. And that doesn't do anything for me.

I find this post fascinating for 2 reasons.
1. At the same time I asked for people to post favorite games that were poorly rated. Hardly any responses. I am really curious about these since they tend to drop in price quickly and you can find some real gems

I didn't like it on the SNES because the graphics still sucked and it was still boring. I didn't like it on the N64 because the graphics didn't do anything for me and neither did the subject matter. What little I have played of the new one has failed to impress me yet again. It reminds me alot of this terrible FPS game released by Disney for the PC themed around one of their recent movies. I don't know - I don't think it needs to be explained because some people like broccoli and some can't stand it. Some people don't like chocolate. Some people don't like ice cream. I'm not too surprised at all. The funny thing about it is, if you look at my post, right underneath where it says "Final Fantasy Sucks" it says "I love Gitaroo Man!".. which not only is a PS2 game, but a Sony released game.. so it's only proving that some people are less concerned with my opinion on the PS2/Sony than trying to stick up for thier precious widdle games. Of course replying "YOU ARE AN IDIOT AND FINAL FANTASY IS THE GREATEST THING EVER AND I'M GOING TO MARRY AERITH WHEN I GROW UP!!" is an instant ban, so they try to exploit the one rule specific to this section of the forum.
I think this is a great thread. However it's a dangerous thread, simply because some people can't handle the fact that somebody doesn't like "popular game of the week", and that's sad. I love Metroid and Zelda, yet I respect the fact that there are people that don't, and simply because they don't like Nintendo games does not mean they are blindly console bashing. If somebody has hated every Zelda game ever made, I think it's safe to assume they will hate the new one too, even if it's not released yet.. and no Virgina, that's not console bashing either.
Ginsu, there's a simple reason that this thread has many more posts than it's equally excellent sister thread.. and that's because it's a LOT easier to find popular games that you don't like than unpopular games you think are great. It's easy to hear everybody ooze over Grand Theft Auto 3, and you've no doubt been bombarded with commercials, you're curious and try it, and don't link it.. when you hear nothing but bad things about a game, and low reveiw scores, it's a lot harder to give that game a try to find out that you really like it..

I hate all RPGs. MGS2 just got way too cartoonish way too fast. I prefer the more down to earth Max Payne. What's the deal with the cult following of the Tenchu series? Controlling the characters in those games is like trying to drive a Mack truck through an obstacle course.

For some reason I don't really like them. It's just not.....fun for me.

I HATE Socom, it's frustrating and crappy. I dont think anyone else mentioned it and my view won't be popular......but I don't care. It's just one person's opinion.

I agree - Socom sucked. Ghost Recon is better. :)

HALO-
Heard so much about the graphics, writing, gameplay, etc. And while pretty to look at, it lacks mucho in the imagination department. Give me No One Lives Forever anyday over this borefest.

All that is Tekken. I played. I yawned. I returned to the store. For some reason I couldn't get into it. Surprisingly enough Fighting games are my favorite Genre.
Super Mario Sunshine The little plumber did me wrong. I bought it all happy played for a few days, haven't been able to pick it up since.
Kingdom Hearts I just can't get far in this one. I have been forcing myself to play, waiting for it to get it 'good' Games should not be like that
Tony Hawk, Jermey bmx whatever, kelly surfer who? These games are fun for like 2 min. I'm not paying $50 bucks for 2 min. A gigolo would fit better in that catagory.
Halo yes i said it. and no I don't hate FPS. Own it, played it, still in house for one reason: roommate likes it. damn him!
Everquest, Asheron Call Don't understand the appeal of these titles. and Also don't understand the hatred between the two camps. They are one in the same from what I played.
I'm done for now. maybe i'll think of more later

if your gigolo only lasts 2 minutes for 50 bucks, you oughtta find a new gigolo and tell him to find a new line of work. ;)
