So is this game worth it or not? I'm still contemplating on it.

This game looks pretty cool but I'm still not sure about it. I shouldn't even consider a new game after dropping cash on a new PC and Muppet toys but what's 50.00 extra huh? :D

I might see if I can rent it. Most times I am forced to buy most anything because my rental options around here are so poor.

According to another thread here, the new EGM is giving it 5.5, 4.0, 5.5. Not very good...

I'd try the demo, or at least find a detailed review to hear the reviewers' gripes before getting it.

I'm not too sure, but was told they were unhappy with the game because they did not like how the Chinese Director (by the way, his name is Shao Ting :)) is portrayed as a buck-tooth Chinese with bad English. They believe the game has racial stereotypes and should not be encouraged.

I personally believe they missed the whole point of the game.

Here's my take on it so far (I picked it up on my way home from work so I've only had a chance to play it for 2 hours).....

CONS:

There's only 6 characters to choose from, but you get to unlock 2 more and one additional which is suppose to be a mystery.

The characters could have been a little larger on the screen.

Does not seem to support 480p (as indicated on the back of the keepcase).

PROS:

The graphics in this game are pretty detailed. Vibrant colors and I didn't notice any jaggies. The animation is fluid and fun to watch. I like how the menu screens are presented with film grain, scratches, and film jitter to give it the appearance of an old 1970's kung fu flick.

Lots of things going on during gameplay during some scenes (i.e. explosions, busy background animation, ninja stars flying, etc.) and not a single drop in framerate.

There are no less than 23(!) 2-hit, 3-hit, and 4-hit combos for each character. There are blocks, counterattacks, throws, and super attacks. These can all be incorporated into your combo. For example, you can quickly hit an opponent twice and finish off with a grab and throw or you can begin your combo with a counterattack then follow up with two or three more hits.
This is not just a button mashing event (although someone can play it that way if they wanted to). To top it off, combos can be immediately followed by a taunt which is actually encouraged since it is required to unleash each characters super attack.

The dialogue is funny. As mentioned previously, there is taunting and some of the things they say are reminiscent of the dialogue heard in kung fu movies (i.e. "I have avenged you!" or "So, you know kung fu!"). The Chinese director is hilarious as he speaks in 'broken' English (i.e. "You did very great. I'm impressive!" or "That was good but you could have done gooder!").

The main fighting scenes are fun. You could pick things up in the level and throw them at your opponent or use them to break other things in the scene. In some levels, they utilize extras to populate a scene. Well, you can pick these guys up and throw them too. :)

Mini-games are also presented for some variety in the gameplay. Some of these are even more fun than the fighting scenes. There's one where you must catch stuntmen falling from a building and even one that's a spin-off of Pac-Man.

There are 'unlockables' in the game. Each character has an alternate costume that must be unlocked (so far I've unlocked only one alternate costume for only one of the characters but each character MAY have more). Each character has a 'Miniseries' which is composed of three unique challenges for that character that must be unlocked. These extra features are unlocked during the single player game. I think there may be more unlockables (i.e. extra scenes/levels).

That's it for now. The game is presented very well (awesome intro) and seems to have a lot of replayability. Although the amount of time I spent with this game was short, I did not get the feeling it was a rushjob. It feels like the developers thought this one through and delivered a solid game.

I will continue playing again tomorrow and will try the Multiplayer offerings this weekend with some of my buddies.

I read the review. They didn't like Fuzion Frenzy either. I still play that game and I bought it before the Xbox was even out. We have a lot of fun playing. I think I'll pick up Kung Fu Chaos this weekend.

I better pick it up - I've been interested for quite some time now. Now it's a must-have since MS will probably have to pull it from shelves due to racism... the price will skyrocket... muahahhaha ;)

IGN (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/386/386666p1.html) didn't like it either:

Closing Comments

I have to hand it to Microsoft. When we first saw KFC it was total crap. There was nothing enjoyable about the game whatsoever. The half-year delay has truly saved this game from being a total waste of disc space. However, it's still a very flawed game that just doesn't work with four players.
KFC is a tough one to judge for me. I put in a lot of hours in the single-player mode and really, really dug it. But when playing multiplayer, it was never a joy. I've yet to play with anyone who wasn't totally frustrated, annoyed, or bored by the game in a multiplayer match. Everyone I've tricked into player single-player has had fun. But, the multiplayer just isn't good.

As much as I like the single-player modes, the truth is this is a multiplayer game. It's a party game. And as such, it's not so good. If you just want to enjoy this by yourself or possibly with one other friend, I'd say rent it first and test it out then buy it if you like it. But as a party game intended for four buddies at once, it's a big no. So sorry, try again.

-- Hilary Goldstein

Presentation
Inventive environments, fun characters, and perfect '70s Kung Fu spoofery. 8.0

Graphics
Solid effects and some interesting environments, but the game isn't as varied and interesting as it could have been. 6.0

Sound
Good '70s flavor you can easily toss and use your own music if preferred. The sound effects are basic and the voices are limited, just like a real action movie. 7.0

Gameplay
The single-player mode is a lot of fun, but this game is a train wreck when you toss in four players. Hard to see what you are doing or know what is going on. Limited control scheme. 5.0

Lasting Appeal
The selling point of any fighter is a strong multiplayer mode, which KFC lacks. It's the single-player stuff that will occupy your time. But buys a party game to play alone? 6.0

OVERALL SCORE (not an average) 6.3

I bought this game last night. Tried multiplayer and the single game. I think the multiplayer is more fun then single player. Which is the complete opposite of some of the reviews. We played team against the computer it was fun. This game is either love it or hate type game. If your not sure rent it or wait for the demo. I don't want to recommend it because like I said it's either love it or hate type game.

I bought this game and I thought it was pretty fun. I like the songs in the game too. Enter the Dragon and Kung Fu Fighting. It is a like it or hate it game. So, you should rent this before you get it. Hey anybody get 5 stars in "Waterwhirl" yet? I find that hard. By the way who is your favorite character. I like Ninja Fu Hiya.

This game sounds like fun. I'll have to rent it and see what it's like. I've always liked fighting games, so I should enjoy this.

Go with a game that is actually worth the money. Maybe if you can find it used for $10-15 that's be great, but until then, no.

Care to qualify that at all or is this just part of a pad-spree? ;)

I think this game is worth $49.99. I judge it on fun factor. If the game is a lot of fun then it is worth the money. Especially multiplayer. I like the level design also and how it changes as you play. Cool game

Ditto. I believe that it's worth it. I finally got to finish one of the mini-series for Master Sho Yu to unlock the Casting for him.

I finally played the Multiplayer aspect of the game this past weekend and had a blast. Playing co-operatively as a team (2 vs. 2) was fun. Lots of laughing and trash talking during the whole thing.

Being able to customize the parameters of the game is a nice addition. (i.e. Win by most style points, kills, mojo, or best of 3 or 5 games, and more).

Watching the Final Cuts (replays) are like watching a John Woo flick and you can save them to your HD too.

Unlocked the final "mystery" character as well: Dir. Shao Ting and his megahorn as his super attack

The level designs are an important factor in making this game fun. Lots of variation in the levels. Most of the levels are also interactive (able to pick things up, make spikes come out of the ground, throw your opponent into a mouth and stomp on a button to close them in, etc.

Too many cool features in this game to list. I'm certainly enjoying it.:thumbsup:

I went and go my taxes done today and since it went way better than last year I went out and treated myself to this game. I have a friend coming over asap to play. All my buddies wanted to play this game but since they are all teens and I'm the adult they all waited for me to buy it. As always.

Can't wait to try it out.

So far in this thread there have been no real negative impressions on this game. I find that odd, since the game has been getting mediocre reviews, at best.

If this was a thread on Splinter Cell (which has been getting excellent reviews), you know there'd be at least a few people who'd be ragging on it.

Why is that?

MasterofDVD
03-12-03, 07:57 PM
Well....it's a very good looking game and very fun. Some of the levels are rough but I've on played about 6 so far.

Very good so far. The multi player is great and what I've played solo is very good as well. If the reviews have been less than stellar I'm very glad I ignored them.

IMHO Splinter Cell was hyped a ton and when it came out it just couldn't please everyone. I like it but others seem to think it could of been way better. Kung Fu Chaos had no hype machine rolling full force for it and kinda came out of nowhere. How could you let down people who had heard almost nothing about the game? You can't really.

Oh.....and I do trust Penny Arcade and here is what Gabe has to say:

At any rate I wanted to comment on Kung Fu Chaos which I have seen take a beating in a few reviews. This is from the IGN review:

"...when playing multiplayer, it was never a joy. I've yet to play with anyone who wasn't totally frustrated, annoyed, or bored by the game in a multiplayer match. Everyone I've tricked into player single-player has had fun. But, the multiplayer just isn't good."

Just because all of Hilary's friends are dumb shits she says the multiplayer is bad. I don't blame Hilary for not being able to find a single person who liked the game at IGN. I mean that place is where writers go when they don't get hired by Maxim. These guys are practicing their craft at the bottom of the proverbial barrel. I can't even imagine the bunch of sour faced rejects she must have to put up with on a daily basis. All desperately sawing at their wrists with the plastic butter knife they swiped along with an extra pudding cup from the cafeteria. "Hey Frank I know you said you had to get home early tonight so you could sit in your garage with the engine running until you were released from this cosmic joke that is your life, but instead why don't we play a fun little party game with a corny "chop-socky" kinda vibe." Yeah, probably not gonna happen. But the fact is, with a good bunch of friends this game is really a blast.

The game is divided between long dynamic levels and what are essentially mini games. The longer levels will have you and your buddies battling through film sets while the director shouts insults and orders at you. You will be jumping between moving boats and charging across crumbling wooden bridges. Each character has a bunch of combos they can do and you can pick people up and toss them around which is always fun. It's basically just a really good party game that will have you and your friends shouting insults at each other which is the whole point of a party game. So don't pay attention to the bad reviews, they have no idea what they are talking about. The game is a blast and you should definitely get some friends together and check it out.

Yeah, it seems a lot of videogame reviews these days seem to focus too much on technical aspects of a game, or whether it's innovative or not and barely take into account if a game is fun or not.

Whoa, Gabe doesn't care for IGN, huh?

Not that it matters, but I'm pretty sure Hilary is a guy.

I'm going to at least rent KFC soon. The demo was pretty good and the game caught my eye a while back.

I'll definately be getting this one after I get finished with the 4 games that are still sealed. (the wife won't let me get anymore)

Everyone that's been over to my house has had alot of fun playing the demo and I've heard no bad comments from any of them.

I think it'll be a great party game.

Geez this game is brutal. The Enter The Dino level is crazy. Not only does it have some wicked ninjas but the level itself is unforgiving!!! Sat down and went from 5% done to about 33%. My left trigger finer is sore from all the taunts I was doing in the game.

I'm very happy with my purchase.
