Buy an Xbox (or Gamecube) and Phantasy Star Online.. since you're asking about PS2 the best I can say is Everquest Adventures looks like a PSO ripoff, I've only seen the commercial though!
Since you said you wanted to run around and kill people, advoid Final Fantasy, all you do is talk to people (and you don't get experience from it.. yet).

It looks like Dark Cloud 2 is getting great reviews, and it looks really nice. I am tempted by that game. As for a non-linear style game, you want to look at other consoles. Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is a great game for you it sounds like.

While I haven't played too many PS2 RPGs, one thing that I can say is... stay away from Okage. I got it because I heard it was really funny, and was actually quite a fun game. While the first chapter was funny, the rest just got repetitive and dull. The gameplay was incredibly weak, at no point was there a challenge (even when I didn't understand the rocks-paper-scissors aspect of it) I only played all the way through it, because I thought each next level would be the end, and my time wouldn't have been totally wasted... it was

I enjoyed first Dark Cloud. Actually got into From software game which usually only for their cult following. But Dark Cloud and Eternal Ring quite early ps2 rpgs. Last one I finished was Legaia 2 and so totaly loved that one. Your description though does not sound like real rpg to me though, you likely have hard time finding something similar.

For what youre looking for, I think Baldurs Gate will fit your needs perfectly. That is basically all you do in the game, run around, kill things hack and slash style (not turn based like FF) and you get experience points for it. Then you use the gold and experience you get to level up, buy new armor, weapons, etc... EXCELLENT game

a few were mentioned already. I liked Baldur's Gate especially the $19.99 price
Dark Cloud/ Dark Cloud 2
Suikoden III
Kingdom Hearts-although this might not be the type of RPG you are looking for.
Wild Arms 3
Legaia 2
Grandia 2
Summoner/Summoner 2

Cornholio, sounds like you prefer action rpgs, so i would recommend Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. It's fun for 1 or 2 players.

I'm sorta getting confused with all the different conversions of many games out there.
