I pretty much don't, unless it's someone I know is into offbeat movies.
I've introduced a few friends to Blue Velvet, After Hours (video, of course), and Reservoir Dogs (which they mostly weren't as partial to), but they don't live around me anymore, so it's a bit more challenging.

One movie I like to spread the word about is Insignificance. I believe it comes out on DVD today. It concerns a night when Albert Einstein, Marilyn Monroe, Joe McCarthy, and Joe DiMaggio all rendezvous in a hotel room in the 1950s.
Is it great? No. But, it is quirky enough, with an intelligent script. Plus, watching MM explaining relativity to Einstein is pretty much worth the price of admission.

The first one I harped, back in 94/95 was Dazed and Confused when I was in high school and got my entire circle of friends hooked in and it was a classic, though that's fairly known in the circles I travel in now. But now I push:
James Burke's Connections(BBC documentary that's brillant, explaining how past inventions have tied into our modern world
Talk to Her(see this movie, better than Y Tu Mama)
CKY vids
Super Fuzz(and a lot of the old HBO 80's flicks, Odd Jobs, Armed and Dangerous, Gleaming the Cube, Fletch 2)
Whatever

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas(underseen)
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind(way underseen too)

I cant believe people actually recommend Boondock Saints. I try to stop people from seeing that every chance I get. The biggest disappointment last year for me was that movie. It had a great plot but terrible execution. If you hated the over-the-top Dafoe of Spider Man this will make you vomit.

What was the Wizard of Speed and Time about again? I'm pretty sure I used to watch that movie all the time when I was really young, but it was weird. Only thing I can remember about it now is some guy in a green outfit running really fast with some girl in his arms.

I thought it had some moments, but your post had me cracking up, because it's mostly on point. However, I do feel like the Il Duce Character is picked up, it really gains steam and leaves viewers on a high, and people recommend off the last third, forgetting the drag in act 1 +2. And the guy that plays Rocco is laughable, this movie could have been saved had they casted a guy who looked like a mobster and a Mick Foley lookalike who dresses like Silent Bob and is hammier than the lovechild of Soupy Sales and Bobby Slayton.

Most people I know either already know about the indies/unknowns I really like or are fairly oblivious to anything that doesn't have promos running on TV (i.e., not mainstream). I subjected my dad (who's got good taste in terms of the classics) to FOTR, Memento, and Fight Club ... he was not a fan of these. After seeing FOTR, he called me up and said the ending was cut off because they didn't throw the ring into the mountain. Seriously.

WOSAT is the kind of labour of love that has me grinning from ear to ear everytime i watch it.
i've heard Jittlov (sp?) is burning dvd-r's of this for anyone that wants to buy it on dvd.
Criterion or anchor bay should talk to him.
this movie is sweet beyond words.
after i raved about and screened American Movie for my friend, he actually went out and bought the dvd.
suprised the hell out of me since he is very tight with his money and doesn't own a lot of discs besides a few anime. we try to turn everybody else we work with on to this when we get a chance.
Phantom of the Paradise is another one i try to get people to watch, but haven't had much sucsess with.
still think its a hell of a fun movie.
i really wish Fox would put out Dirty Mary/ Crazy Larry on a good dvd. the only thing holding this back from having a much larger rabid cult has been its inacsessability on video. there is probably a huge audience out there for it, but they don't even know about it.
there was a vhs tape out about 20 years ago, but nothing since then. major studio oversight here.

I spend most of my time trying to convince people that movies were made before 1980 and that some of them are really good (even when they're in black and white). I also admit you need to be choosy, just like today's films...there are greats and there are real dogs.
Just saw Red Beard the other night for the first time. Guess I need to add a new category to my sermons...made before 1980, in black and white and subtitled. Now THAT's going to be a hard sell (but a great movie).

Theatrical films I really rallied for recently were "Late Marriage", "The Man From Elysian Fields", "Igby Goes Down" and "13 Conversations About One Thing".
BTW, I'm pleased to see "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" mentioned several times here. It's one of my favorites, but seems rarely talked about. Oddly enough, it also got mentioned enough times this week to be in the "On the Road" tourney on another site, so I don't know if you're the same people! ;)
