Irreversible R2 shipped!!

Just received notification from amazon.fr that it's on a plane, so I should have it in 2-3 days Unless someone else out there has similar designs, I'm planning to create a subtitle script for this, but I'm going to need a screener/festival source with subs since I'm not fluent in French. Can anyone out there help with this? I'm going to do one for Seul Contre Tous as well, using my R1 DVD as the source. Can't wait to experience Noe's latest!!

You haven't seen it yet? Just a suggestion... absolutely do not allow any interruptions while watching this movie.

The subtitling projects sound good - just one question: are you doing one for "Seul contre tous" for the benefit of any non-French speakers who buy the R2 disc? I'm just curious, as I thought that the existing English-subbed version (i.e. the R1) would suffice for most English/non-French speakers. Like I say, just curious...
Anyway, good luck with doing the subs and with finding a screening tape.

The set finally arrived yesterday and I spent much of the night going through it. It's a nice little package: director commentaries on both films, the 38 minute short film CARNE that introduces the Butcher character in SEUL CONTRE TOUS, for IRREVERSIBLE: a special effects docu, deleted scenes, and an extra CD with the soundtrack.
Yes, I will be creating a script for SEUL CONTRE TOUS for my non-French speaking friends This R2 version is FAR superior to the crappy R1 disc.
As for IRREVERSIBLE, what an astonishing and searing film. It left me battered and flabbergasted. From what I've read, reaction to this film has been extremely polarized. Still, it's a must see!

No, the Italian version only has Italian subtitles. However, if someone out there gets the Italian DVD and the subtitles are removable, please rip them and send them! I'm more fluent in Italian than French, and it would save a lot of time by already having a timed script. From the Italian script, I could have an English one done in less than a day!

"...are the DVDs closed-captioned?"

...afaik 'close captioning' is strictly a Region 1 affair... unlike NTSC TVs, PAL TVs are not equipped to decode CC...

. . . . . .

I've just got round to picking this up today (a bit late - I meant to get it on day of release).
Anyway, just to amplify what snowchasse said - it really is a very good set. Nicely presented, with some interesting extras plus Thomas Bangalter's excellent soundtrack album on a separate CD. All in, a good value box set ( and for non-French speakers: worth learning the language for ).

I just saw the movie last night at the American Cinematech ( a Lion's Gate print) with the director speaking afterwards. After all the speculation of various experts on this topic in these forums, the director stated point-blank that it has been released UNCUT in every market in the world that it has been sold to (its in his contract) except Japan where there was some digital fogging in the last scene.

So, everyone who is worried/concerned about seeing the uncut version in your country, don't be. And don't shell out $40+ for un-subtitled French disc, all versions are uncut.

Uncut doesn't mean good quality. One example is Brotherhood of the Wolves French version still has the best Audio/Video Quality. Canadian 3 discs version has grainy pic quality, and US version doesn't have DTS track.

Well, considering that the film is just starting its theatrical release in the next couple of weeks, you're jumping the gun a little in worring about DVD specs for a disc that hasn't even been released yet.

My point was simply, don't believe the hype that the movie will never be released uncut in the US. It will be. Unless you speak French, why buy an expensive import when you can't understand what is being said? Especially when there will be an official subtitled release in the future?

You can be sure I will be making a nicely timed script based on the theatrical translation. Aside from that, you get SEUL CONTRE TOUS and CARNE (Noe's short film) in gorgeous transfers. Compare to the barely watchable R1 transfer of SEUL CONTRE TOUS. It is an impressive set and has been well reviewed on several sites. I say, if you're a fan of Noe's, and want the best possible presentation currently available, get this set.
The French really do make some of the best DVDs out there: film noir (Ouf of the Past, Le Samourai and other Melville), Japanese (Tsukamoto sets) and Hong Kong (Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master) cult classics just to name a few.
I am willing to bet the current French Irreversible disc will be better than anything other companies put out, especially since Noe and his co-DP supervised the transfer.

Scripting Projects

Pardon my stupidity, but when people talk about scripting the R2 French DVD's such as this one, what are they doing? Are they just jotting down english translations for non-speakers to read along with the movie or something different? I would be interested in buying many R2 DVD's if I could understand french more than I do, or had an aid such as this.

Snowchasse's referring to creating a timed script that can be used in conjunction with playing the disc on a PC (using something like WinDVD). You need an extra piece of software (which can be downloaded for free) like dvdsubber. A created subtitle script (such as what snowchasse has been referring to) will start with the movie, timed to flash up the appropriate translations at the appropriate times, just like when you watch a regular subbed movie on TV/Video/DVD/in the cinema. The text in the script is overlain on the bottom of the screen. Obviously, it's quite a lot of work for the creator of the subs, but a rewarding and worthwhile project.
Oh, and snowchasse's right about the Fr R2 set - it really is a fine collection. I've been through it several times now, and would highly recommend it. It's not that expensive really, considering that for €35 or so you get two feature films, a short, a CD soundtrack, plus other bits & pieces.
