I can predict who WILL win, but I'd like to see a few more films (Gangs of New York and Adaptation at least) before I predict who SHOULD win.

Best Actor - Adrien Brody - The Pianist (come on, it's a Holocaust film)
Best Actress - Nicole Kidman - The Hours
Best Supporting Actor - Paul Newman - Road to Perdition
Best Supporting Actress - Julianne Moore - The Hours
Best Original Screenplay - Tough to call
Best Adapted Screenplay - Adaptation

and the only other category I care about:
Best Animated Feature - Spirited Away (though I think Lilo & Stitch should win, but SA is good too)

And frankly, I think Tom Hanks deserved to be nominated for The Road to Perdition, and maybe even a supporting nomination for Catch Me If You Can. The only reason this guy isn't getting nominated (and didn't win for Cast Away) is because he won back-to-back statues last decade. I think the Academy should award the best performance, not what will break down color barriers, make up for a past injustice, or finally give an award to someone who's been nominated and lost several times in the past.

But these are the Oscars, what should I expect? :)

Remember that the Oscar always goes to the person that the Academy feels SHOULD win, not the most deserving winner.

this will be the oscars where nicole kidman wins best actress to justify chicago's dominance. i suspect the academy is warmed up to the musical thanks in no small part to nicole. a shame. moulin is the far better musical. baz is god.

If It's not Chicago, the only other movie I think has a chance in hell is Gangs of New York

I doubt this one will be even close

Best Actor - Jack Nicholson - About Schmidt
Of the big categories, I'm most split on this one. Daniel Day-Lewis will also be a big factor. But I'll give the edge to the Academy favorite

Best Actress - Nicole Kidman - The Hours
If nothing else, it's the "make-up" for last year. Julianne Moore would be next in the line

Best Supporting Actor - Paul Newman - Road to Perdition
Chris Cooper is getting some buzz, and the supporting categories often seem to be unpredictable, but I'll go with the flow with Newan

Best Supporting Actress - Julianne Moore - The Hours
Another "make-up" deal, instead of getting the best actress votes, I think she will get the consolation of this award. Only competition seems to be Meryl Streep

Best Original Screenplay - No clue really. The academy seems to shun foriegn/independent films whenever it can. But it will probably want to recognize MBFGW since it's been so popular. So I guess I'd expect that to win, with Gangs of New York the only real threat in my book

Best Adapted Screenplay - Adaptation looks good to me. If not, it will fall to The Hours (or maybe Chicago) I guess

It seems to me that most people do not care to much about the Oscars this year. Chicago, TLOTR and My Big Fat Greek Wedding are the only movies I saw that have been nominated. My wife went to see The Hours and hated it (so did the other 2 people I know who saw it).

You have spoken the truth, but Hollywood does not like the truth. It really deals with fiction and lives in a fiction land.

Tom was robbed by not getting best actor for Castaway and how could he not be nominated for RtP.

I'm really hoping that Chicago doesn't win any of the acting awards or best picture. I'm sorry but a broadway musical put to film still isn't a film. I've seen all of the best picture nominees and this is definitely the least deserving.

Hell, Tom was robbed when Roberto Benigni took home Best Actor over Hanks' eloquent performance in Saving Private Ryan.

For some reason, the Academy and the public lately have developed a bit of a backlash towards Hanks. It's a shame, in my opinion, as he is truly a gifted actor.

When a friend of mine and I walked out of Road to Perdition, I commented on how impressed I was that Hanks was able to pull off playing an evil (not evil as in over-the-top evil, of course) man. "He wasn't evil," my friend said. "He played a good father." The man played a hitman which to me, is not a definition of a good person. But because of Hanks' performance, people were able "forget" just what type of character he was.

He was okay but The Road to Perdition just wasn't that good. Actually, I thought Hanks was a lot better in Catch Me if You Can.....

I think that the academy will give U2 the award for Best Original Song to make up for not even nominating them for 1993's "Stay (Faraway, so Close!)" from Faraway, so Close!.

Of course, I may be a little biased because it's my favorite song of all time-the one from FSC that is. Does the academy have a rule about original songs from foreign films not being eligible, or was it just not specifically written for that film?
