Lawrence Block's "Hitman" series

I have never read a Block novel, but have heard good things about his "Hitman" novels.

Has anyone here read them? If so, do you recommend them (or any other Block novels)?

I highly recommend Block's work. I think he's one of the masters of the genre.

The first HITMAN book is very good; the second is just okay.

The Matt Scudder series is also superb. Try WHEN THE SACRED GINMILL CLOSES.

I agree with everything djmont said.

I loved Hitman. I was so excited to read Hit List, and while it is a decent read, it is nowhere near the book the first one is. Still, I'd highly recommend the read.

Also, ditto on djmont's Scudder opinion.

Block is great! I recommend his gritty Scudder novels first, but for a lighter side, his Bernie Rhodenbarr "Burglar" series is a lot of fun. Like Westlake, he can do the light "Dortmunder" type capers with Bernie as well as the darker stuff equally well.

agreed. Block is one of my favorite writers in any genre. I would take the time to track down the Scudder novels from the very begining and watch his growth as a writer as the years go by. Once he hits the novel where Scudder goes in AA, things really take off.

I enjoyed Hitman very much, but I liked Hit List even more. Go figure...

Either way, hope Block will continue this Keller series.

There are a couple of Keller short stories that have been written since the two books. "Keller's Designated Hitter" is very good. (It can be found in the Block short story omnibus Enough Rope, among other place.)

There's also one that he wrote for Audiobookstoday, which you can read at:

From Lawrence Block's newsletter I received:

Well, hi there! Let me lead off with the news that most gladdens my heart, in the hope that it will have a similar effect upon yours. HIT PARADE, the third book about Keller, is finished, and the good people at Morrow have scheduled it for July 4, 2006. And isn't that great? I publish a book and the whole country gets the day off.

Little did I know, when I wrote a short story called "Answers to Soldier" some fifteen years ago, that I'd go on to write three books about its wistful and contemplative hero. Well, little do I ever know, come to think of it. Like HIT MAN and HIT LIST, HIT PARADE is an episodic novel, and thus should lend itself to stop-and-go reading. So far, though, all the advance readers have been unable to put it down. Make of that what you will.
Awesome!

Does this Hitman series have any connection to the video game franchise?

Just finished reading the first 2, and while I enjoyed them, I wanted more. This series seems to be extremely quick reads.
