DVD Quality:
A high quality HK disc from megastar with solid blacks and bright colours. A few white specs and flicks but thats the way HK discs are. DTS sound has very good use of rears and voices are still dubbed on afterwards. No glaring problems with sound or picture.
Film:
An Andrew Lau AND Alan Mak film, its no wonder this turn out to be watchable at the very least. The way I see it Andrew Lau worked on the look and feel of the movie while Alan Mak did all the real important work of character development and story telling.
A very good cops and robbers movie the best I've seen since Ringo Lam's Full Alert. There isn't much action in this and thus it isn't your typical HK cop Vs triad movie. The soul of the movie is in the characters and the competent editing and styling of the movie keeps makes this a commercial winner.
The importance laid on the chracters in this movie means that the right actors are needed and this is where the main weakness of the film lies because never for a second do you believe that Andy Lau can pull of the multi layered role that is needed here. The movie would have been a lot better without him. Andy Lau is living proof acting is not something you can learn because not many people has made as many films as he has and can still ruin a movie.
The other problem with the movie was the ending ... they had to tag on a "happy" ending which was completely out of synch with the feel and mood of the rest of the movie. The Alternative ending is even worse.
The rest of the movie runs smoothly and quickly and I recommend this high quality cat and mouse thriller.
The extras are nothing to write home about infact they are quite crap about from the behind the scenes clips where you get to hear Andy Lau say he is hungry and "dil".

Will be picking this up this week, there is a lot of hype surrounding this one, with the remake possibilities and all.
Oh and great site there, cirruss, you should do a Korean Film Recommendations site.

Make sure to buy it from ww3.cd-wow.net . They have it for only $12 (or $11 if you use that old Master Card coupon that was posted here a couple of months ago--it still works) with free shipping, and their shipping is very fast.
