Ok.

Is Christian Slaters character involved with (or is he) the signal dude from the assasination from last season that Danny is all over CJ about?

This is what I thought before the show aired tonight.

Now I wonder if he is the 'problem' mentioned in the preview for next week?

I am a newcomer to the West Wing this year... So far I think it is right up there with Six Feet Under. The acting and writing is the best there is. But I hope someone will help me out with a character question...

Who was the person that advised the President that Christian Slater's character would be best to write up a force depletion report because he can keep it under wraps? I am just trying to get a grasp on who all of these characters are and their roles within the White House. Thanks in advance.

right off hand i can't remember who gave the order for the force depletion report but here is a quick rundown of everyone...

president bartlett- obvious.

leo mcgarry- chief of staff. very good friend for many years of bartlett and the one who got him to run in the first place. in some ways runs the white house instead of the president.

josh lyman-deputy chief of staff. at one time worked for VP hoynes but quit to work for bartlett after leo asked him. helps leo in whatever needed and is assisted by....

donna moss - the cute blonde who last night kept wondering about jack reese. doona is josh's secretary who has been with him since she mysteriously appeared in josh's office on the camaign trail. she dropped out of the u. of minnesota(?) and is secretly in love with josh and he with her although neither will admit to it.

charlie young-personal aide to the president-orginally came to the white house for a messenger job and was actually interviewing for something higher. goes everywhere with the president daily. at one time he was dating president bartlett's youngest daughter zoe (another ) but for some unexplained reason they broke up although charlie looks to be trying to fix that.

toby ziegler-white house communications director-shapes the message of the president. head speech writer who was formerly assisted by...

sam seaborn-asst. wh comm. dir.- played by rob lowe who has now left the show over a dispute with the powers that be. when he was there, he was toby's assistant who was best friends with josh from way back. however, he has been replaced by....

will bailey-this is a guy that sam met while he was out in california helping the dead democratic candidate win the primary. he took over for sam when sam decided to run in the primary for the dead guy.

cj cregg- wh press secretary- brought on board by toby after she was fired from an la movie studio for not getting someone enough award show nominations.

there are also quite a few numerous supporting characters who are pretty cool to. hope this helps.

this episode was beyond excellent. i wish they could have put it together as a 2-hour bundle. i like the first half so far, but i don't see this as the end of christian slater
Spoiler:
i believe he had a 6 episode gig, and it isn't that many yet.
the bible plot was great, and will bailey is one of the best add ons ever. i hope he is a mainstay for now on. and donna as always is awesome.

I really enjoyed this episode and was kinda pissed off when it ended (didn't realize it was a two-parter). I honestly dont' remember who it was that advised the force depletion report; after watching the show for one year the secondary characters still confuse me. I tiwll be interesting to see what they do with Christan Slater's character since he's got about 2 more episodes left.

ok, i may be in the minority here, but maybe sorkin is finally going to give us a payoff in the whole josh/donna thing. the only reason that i say that is because of the subtle hints in the last few weeks, most notably on the part of josh when he was telling jack reese about donna, and at christmas when leo sent donna off without telling josh. now i may be wrong and we may not see much actual payoff, but at least these two characters are finally realizing just how much they mean to one another.
