February 04, 2003 - On January 24 IGNcube reported that Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios had been given the green light by Nintendo to start work on a GameCube sequel. The news came by way of inside sources, but neither Nintendo of America nor Retro Studios would offer official comments on the subject.
Today, though, comes the first official confirmation that a sequel, tentatively dubbed "Metroid Prime 2," is underway. A link on Nintendo's website announces the game and also reads: "A follow-up to the hit Metroid Prime is in development. No release date or other information is available at this time."
Metroid Prime, a first-person adventure starring space bounty hunter Samus Aran, sold upward of 700,000 units in little more than a month on the market. The game also earned high praise from critics across the board, even garnering "Game of the Year" awards from numerous magazines and online sites.
We'll have more on the sequel as information becomes available.

Don't get me wrong, I love the machine. But it's just frustrating how long it took to get some quality games out. Plus I'm still waiting for Mario Kart.

Let's not be overly critical here. Nintendo has already released...
Luigi's Mansion
Wave Race
Super Smash Bros.
Pikmin
Eternal Darkenss
Mario
Animal Crossing
Mario Party
Metroid
...and probably a few other titles. Plus a new Zelda game and 2 older Zelda games are right around the corner.
Anyways, this is good news about MP2. I assume it will be a lot like MP but that won't bother me.

I know, it's just that other than Smash, it DID take a while for them to release some big titles.

Hopefully they tweak the controls a little, the Lock-On feature made the game to easy and a little repetetive... And if I didn't use the lock on feature I couldn't aim / fire / move all at the same time :johnwoo:

Nintendo has secured virtually, if not 1 AAA game per month since the GC debuted. They are getting plenty to the market, you are just gready. Just because a game may not cater to your specific tastes, does make the game any less "big".

Happy to hear about MP2 coming. I still need to finish the first.
As for the other stuff, I find it almost offensive (to me at least) that Nintendo has not released Mario Kart yet. Perhaps it is due to their uncertain online plans?

I like the lock on system. its more realistic for a space-age suit of armour to have advanced lock on features instead of the suits wearer trying to aim with the little yellow C stick.

The Gamecube launched on Nov. 18 and Smash Bros and Pikmin came out in early December. That's hardly a while.
If you're talking about after those two, then I'll concede that point. But that has nothing to do with Nintendo really. The first few months of every year are always really slow for game releases. Usually just some second tier games, and a couple big games (like DMC2 and Panzer this year) that got delayed and missed their original pre-holiday list.

I loved it as well. It made it feel like a Metroid game. In 2-d games (like the old Metroids) you didn't really have to aim much. You just face what you want to shoot, hit the shoot button and concentrate on dodging. The lock on feature translated this feel very well to 3D. Just lock on, hit the shoot buttons and concentrate on dodging. I was afraid MP would end up feeling like a run of the mill FPS, rather than the First Person Adventure that it was being hyped as. The lock-on feature kept it from feeling like an FPS, made it feel like an FPA as most of the time was spent exploring and scanning stuff, and most importantly made it feel like a metroid game.
huh?

I disagree. Nintendo has pushed tons of AAA titles out for the Gamecube. Let us not forget the N64. One year later, what did we have? The problem is, Nintendo’s games tend to all be great, and people just want more of them. They are a victim of their own success I guess. The fact that they are making a metroid prime sequel is not because they are just realizing they need to pump more AAA titles out, it just shows that they know what AAA titles are, and they have another one to share with the rest of us.
