Lunar Legend is the GBA remake of the game, but it has some significant differences. Obviously, the cutscenes are reduced to screenshots, but the story apparently has some changes as well. It has an extra dungeon and some graphics improvements, but worse music.
Lunar: Silver Star Story is the PSX release. Some reviews claim that the original story is better and that the GBA characters are less developed. It has animated (as in, anime) cutscenes. The PSX game has some interesting-sounding extras, like a making-of disc and a music CD.
I'd have to buy either from a second-hand dealer, and I'd probably pay about the same amount ($35 shipped).
It sounds obvious, but I just want to get some thoughts from people who would know first-hand.
(I'm also planning on buying Lunar 2.)

I would go for the whole show and get Silver Star Story. The GBA is great, but the anime scenes are worth seeing. I'd go for the PSX version.

Yeah, but the PSX version had so many story differences from the original game I lost count.

Well, I have a Saturn, too.
Edit: Oops, nevermind, I guess it was for Sega CD and a Saturn version came out just in Japan.

And the Saturn version is the same as the PSX version. :D
And actually.. the Sega CD version has the best music of the 3 versions.

Okay!
This is my favorite game.
Go get a Sega CD and get the game on the Sega CD.
The PSX and the GBA versions are not as good.

Are they both by Working Designs? WD has a history of messing with the story during localization, especially inserting jokes here and there. But if they did both, it doesn't matter.
That aside, the Lunar:SSS package for the PS1 is a pretty sweet package, especially for around 35 bucks. Never got around to picking up Lunar 2, since I never finished the first one. Even though it's not a huge part of the story, the animated cutscenes are what really made this rpg stand out, to me at least, back when it came out on Sega CD, so there's no way I'd pick the GBA version over the PS1 version.

All are by Working Designs. The Sega CD version of either Lunar or Lunar II (forget which one) is actually a harder game than the corresponding PS version. One of the bosses is harder to beat and when saving a game you actually lose a part of your stats, something like that.
The PS version has extras though like collecting the Bromides. You'll love these.

I have both Sega CD games. Its Lunar II that makes it cost for you to save games. It was a stupid feature put in by Working Designs (not in the Japanese version) and thankfully was removed for the PSX version.
Its not worth getting a Sega CD just to play these games. The stories are changed a bit, but the PSX versions are excellent and I would go with those.

I have the Silver Star Story Complete for the PSX, its pretty good! It came with a cloth map, hard cover full color book, a Making Of CD and a music CD). It would be nice if other American companies treated their fans as well as Working Designs :).
As far as the game, the graphics are kind of dated even for 2D but its still pretty good and the story and characters make up for it, there are lots of bonuses on the PSX version like the animation scene, songs, and out takes. I actually like Eternal Blue better but they're both good

You'll probably have a hard time finding it new with all the goodies as it was limited for the run they had. You can buy it without the goodies for a lot cheaper now.

Yeah, I'm not going to buy a Sega CD (and a Genesis or whatever, I don't know what I would need) just for a couple games, when I already have a PSOne.
But I guess it's decided -- PSX all the way. :)

You might want to get a list of where and when to retrieve the Bromides before you play. The window of opportunity is very small and if you don't get it then, you won't get it unless you start a new game.
