I have a sony dvd player ( I don't remember the model number) that I bought in 1998. Recently I have noticed that when I watch a dvd, especially during a dark or black scene, I can see what appears to be scan lines. It looks like a wave moving from the top to the bottom of the screen. I bought my Sony Wega at the same time, but It looks fine with other video sources are being used. I believe that I got a cleaning service with my player ( I have to check on that) or should I just use a lens cleaner?

I think the DVD would either play or not, or pixelate, if it were dirty. It's not going to give you wavy lines like you'd get from an analog source. You could always try a lens cleaner though.
You should check your cables from the player to the TV. Maybe move the set and cables to see if you're getting any interference.

The player and cables are the same as the always have been, but this has just started, and progressively gotten worse that last couple of months. I use a monster video cable, so I don't think that is the problem. Maybe the player is just getting old and getting ready to crap out.

Scan line wil run horizontally so it isn't that, but the comment about wavvy lines leads me to believe you have either a cable gone bad or some sort of electro interference going on (maybe a power cable or some other source causing the interference with the video cable from the DVD player to the TV).
