I just saw an inventory list of some of the items my boss is putting into his media room that is to be a part of the new house he is building. I don't know if I should be in awe, cry, or just shake my head. Being very satisfied with my current set up that only set me back several grand I can't imagine how I would react to experiencing something of this magnitude. Here are just a few of the items he will be including:
1. Yamaha DPX-1 high definition movie projector
2. 120" custom high gain viewing screen
3. Toshiba SD-4800 progressive scan dvd player
4. Denon AVR-1083 Dolby Digital EX Surround Processor
5. Sony 400 CD carousel
6. Niles Audio Intellicontrol theater automation system
Also included are:
Jamo loudspeakers, high definition cables, motorized window shades, etc.....
Sucks to be rich ;)

It looks to me like this is an installer (retailer) proposal.
For 40K I know I could do much better than the items listed there.

Bingo, my boss won't do a single thing himself- and doesn't know the first thing about home theater equipment, but he's got the $$$ to spend and have someone else tell him what they "recommend" he go with... I guess this is just more proof that you don't always get what you pay for...and it's usually better to do it yourself whenever possible.

Wow, he could do a lot better for $40k. Pretty sad.

Well, let me see, everything listed is around what, $5000? Maybe $8000 including the retarded Niles Audio Intelli thingie mah jiggie?
Your boss deserves EVERYTHING HE WILL GET.
Oh, and you can probably make the same damn system for 1/4 of what he is paying, including labor.
Someone is sure making a good buck off of your HT-illiterate friend. LOL. LOL. LOLOLOLOLOLOL....

Here's my 40K system:
DENON DVD-9000
DENON AVR-5803
PIONEER 730HD
A pair of Electrostatic front speakers (about $10K)
Velodyne HSUII-18
Carver 9t Front Amps for the statics (x2) (don't need them for the satellites)
and maybe I'll add more later....

yeah, why on earth would he get the yamaha dpx-1 when it doesn't even do high definition? if i'm spending 40 grand on a system i'm going with a HD capable projector for sure! and it's a 4x3 projector to boot. :yack:

Denon 1803, are you mistaken or are your boss mistaken!

I don't know about the Denon 1803, but I know several people who actually use a Denon 3803 as a pre-amp and then hook up some additional amps to juice the system. I would opt for this option over the 5803 IMO. The net out of pocket cost would likely be less and you could always upgrade the pre-amp later and sill use the amps..
On a side note, one of our partners is dumping similar cash into his own HT. I had better work harder so he can upgrade his equipment. (The only components I remember him mentioning is the Runco DLP projector and Lexicon processors/pre/amps). It must be nice..

Nope. the AVR-1083 is just the "retail" version of the 3803. What I mean by that is, the 1083 is the exact same receiver as the 3803, with a different model # on it, and it's available from "retail" locations like Sears and other "non-audio specialty" stores. The warranty on the 1083 is only 1 year, and it is easier to purchase this model online, without worrying about the "authorized denon dealer" situation. And it's about $100 cheaper than the 3803.
That said, the 3803 is a fine fine choice, and I personally LOVE my 3803...BUT if I'm spending $40 large on an HT, I'm going with the 5803, or even better - a dedicated amp and a dedicated processor. There's pros and cons each way...

I think he's right and you're wrong.
So, we're either starting a big ol' myth, or somebody needs to post proof.

Please do some research and stop accusing people of things that your misinformation tells you to. Check the Denon website, try the avsforum, hometheaterhifi, or any of the other prominent audio/video forums...
As for the proof...here's a scan of the manual cover for the 3803/1083...chew on this for a while buddy...

Ahhh... that makes a little more sense then. I forgot Denon did that with model numbers - I used to have an AVR-87 that I bought at Sears, it was the same thing as the AVR-1800. It does make me wonder who's setting this up for him though, I just can't imagine forking over $40K to a place like Sears to have them set up my HT.

Hey...Sorry about the confusion...you see..I am actually dyslexic and read it as "1803". I know about the 1803, but not the 1083, so apologies are in order. You are probably right.
