Retro is developing a sequel to Metroid Prime

From cube.ign.com:
January 23, 2003 - Sources at Texas-based Retro Studios told IGNcube this morning that the company is in planning stages for a sequel to the hit GameCube adventure Metroid Prime. Executives at the company recently made an internal announcement to employees that the project has been cleared by Nintendo.

No details were given about the sequel, but one employee under the condition of anonymity did note that team members were throwing around the idea of including a multiplayer mode in the sequel.

No release date has been set for the project, but a tentative date of sometime in 2004 is likely.

We contacted Nintendo for official comment, but the company did not return our phone calls in time for publish.

We will of course be tracking the development of the game over the next several months. Stay tuned to the site for more.

...which means that the next Nintendo console won't launch with Metroid if this won't be done till sometime in 2004.

I'm not surprised though.

Huh, what are you talking about? the next console won't be out till at least 2005 and more likely 2006. If they release in 2004 then they will release on the GCN.

It is strange having a sequel already in the works. It's kind of like Zelda Majora's Mask. That was anounced very soon after Ocarina of Time was released.

A sequel to one of Nintendo's most successful games?

I didn't see that coming.

If the next console comes out in 2005 and this sequel comes out in 2004, they more than likely won't have time to prepare a title in time for the 2005 launch.

If the next console launches in 2006, they'd probably have time to finish it, but they'd be in trouble for other reasons if both of the other next gen consoles come out in 2005.

Actually, EAD (or whomever) could do their own Metroid game for for a 2005 launch and let Retro do their sequel for 2004.

I'm probably worrying needlessly, but the idea of a multiplayer Metroid doesn't sound like a good idea. Metroid has always been a 1 player adventure and it could end up finally ending up as a first person shooter. Yeah I know game franchise's need to grow and adapt, but I just don't want this to end up like Unreal Tournmant in the land of Metroid or the designers spend more time on the multi-player aspects and not on the 1 player main story. Metroid's got a certain style of 1 player gameplay that rules and never gets old, I want it to stay that way.

I don't think multi-player will hurt anything. At least not as long as it's an afterthought after they've made the single player game as good as possible.

Either way I won't play it, as I hate death matches, and don't like multi-player gaming much in general (other than sports games).

the only way multiplayer would be interesting is if you could do split screen co-op mode. It'd be hard to do in the Metroid style of play but if they could that would be awesome.
