Anyone know of any cheap/free data recovery programs for a hard drive? I had almost 40 GB of data on a hard drive and I don't know how I lost it, but I know it's not gone and I don't want to pay a company to get it back, cause it's not that important, but if there's a cheap alternative, I would love to try. Thanks.

I don't know of a cheap one but OnTrack Easy Recovery is the best I have use so far. This program is awesome.

Thanks. I downloaded a trial version of the program on the internet and it seems to be doing the trick. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can download the trial version from Download.com (http://download.com.com/3000-2248-5921140.html?tag=lst-0-1).

It also says that the software costs $489 to buy. -eek-

You don't need the professional edition, but the standard version is not cheap either @ $199

Yeah, so I used the trial version to scan the drive and found all the files there, however, you need a real version of the software in order to transfer the files over to a good hard drive. So right now I can only view some of the files. Thanks for the help, but I don't think I'll be shelling out $200 for this stuff. It's really good software, but it's not that necessary.
