Here's a dumb question.
I saw Usual Suspects years ago, and loved it.
I recently picked up the SE, and I look forward to watching it again.
Question is my 11 yr old daughter has expressed interest in watching it after looking at the back cover, and for the life of me I can't recall why the film is rated R. I would guess it was language, because my fading memory doesn't recall any excessive violence or nudity.
Am I wrong.......?

There's a considerable amount of swearing and violence in the film. At least 10 people are murdered on screen and many more that we don't see.

Murders/crime aftermath, dead bodies, a rape scene (brief and not too graphic), a lot of swearing

Probably due solely to the swearing.

Don't forget the brutal, on-screen, graphic depiction of a murder in slow motion and close up...of the coffee cup.

Definitely due to the language... Fair amount of violence but it's the f bombs, c*** sucker, mf'er, etc that might concern me if I were you...

If your interested (since character names are not given, don't consiter these spoilers even though they might be important to the story

SEX/NUDITY 2 - A woman's blouse is yanked down during a rape (see Violence/Gore below) but the scene is blurry; her breasts are barely visible.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Many scenes of men with guns and many men are shot and killed (with some blood). Two men are killed in an elevator leaving bloody smears. A man shoots another man at point-blank (we just hear the shots). We see a bloody corpse and charred bodies are brought out of the water. A badly burned man is shown in a few scenes. A man staggers around with a knife in the back of his throat. Men attack and rape a family; the father kills his own family during the attack and then walks away in a blaze of fire. Much talk of violence that isn't shown.
PROFANITY 9 - 30+ F-words, 35+ scatological terms, and many milder obscenities.

Had I never even seen the film, this description would make it sound like the greatest movie ever made.

I really don't understnad why you wouldn't let your daughter watch it because of the swearing...
Kinda like "don't look at this picture from Auschwitz! It is EVIL and GROWN UP and should not exist in your mind!!!"
The only thing that should worry you should be violence.
Also, why are you parents nervous about letting your children se any kind of nudity? I don't mean porn, but just nudity in movies?
I watched so many violent movies when I was little, the only thing that ever got to me was the violence, in VERY few cases. Actually now I think about it, the only "scary" imagery that got sutck on me was from a documentary about a ghost ship....

Maybe because she's 11 years old?...

Not a movie a child should see, that is why it is rated R...

If you have the disc, why don't you just watch it after your daughter has gone to bed, and decide if it's OK for yourself? I think you know what's allright for your child better than strangers on a forum.

Not a movie a child should see, that is why it is rated R... Well, actually, I think that it is depending on the childs maturaty. I think I was 7 or 8 when I first saw Terminator 2, which is rated R for probably stronger violence by far and strong language.
12thmonkey, Has your daughter seen any other R rated movies.

Then the teachers and other parents aren't exactly your best friends. Trust me I know.
Although I still think it's f**king funny. :)

Aside from the swearing and violence, another reason not to let your daughter watch it is to save yourself the exhausting time of trying to explain the ending and how everything fell in place.
My mom is 49 and she never understood. :D

Yes she has.
I didn't really intend this thread to be an analysis of whether kids should see R movies in general, but rather the specifics of one film.
I think we all know that plenty of films have been rated R that could have easily been PG-13. All it takes is an F-word to reference the sex act, and you're there.
I don't have a problem with my child watching a film with swearing. She doesn't like horror films or particularly scary films, but she does enjoy films that make her think.

I think there's a difference between general swearing for effect and the type of swearing in this film.
I would have a problem taking my young child to films with a f*** or s*** here and there for effect. But when you get into the "suck my c***, you skull f***ing maggot" territory, that's just too much.
But then every child is different.

I'm somewhat in agreement on that, which is sort of what prompted my original post. I hadn't seen the film in a few years, and my recollections of the content specifics were a little vague.
