What rapper started this annoying trend?

"Just wave your hands in the aierah, and wave them like you just don't carerah" It seems like every rapper out there uses this when on stage, to get the crowd pumped up, but I am one to find it very annoying. Give us something new.

What singer first said "are you ready to rock?" or "sing with me.... i can't hear you!"

there are just some staples of live music that are eternal

Yes, every rapper since the Sugar Hill Gang has kept up this amazing 20+ year trend.

The first time I heard the "wave your hands..." pronounced in the "wave your hands in the ay-yer, and wave 'em like you just don't cay-yer" way was in Outkast's ATLiens. That was around 1996.

It goes back to at least 1992, when Snoop Dogg (known as Snoop Doggy Dogg then) said it in "What's My Name." That was the first time I heard it. He phrased it a little differently in the uncensored version though.

At that time the phrase was probably 8 years old... Trying to forget who exactly said it first, but I would bet on members of the Sugar Hill Gang.

"Now throw yo' hands in the ay-yer,
And wave 'em like you just don't cay-yer,
And if ya like fish & grits and all the pimp s***,
Everybody let me hear ya say o-yay-er"

The only time I've ever liked the line actually.

Great album.

reminds me of the episode of my wife and kids. damon wayans complaining about how rappers keep telling the audience to do stuff. "shoot i apid for my ticket you wave your hands and sing the song!"

Some rapper circa 1998 tried

"Pull ya pants past ya rump"
"Now let me see ya take a dump"

But it didn't go over to well, so ever since then they've stuck with the hands one.
