I have a kenwood 1070vr pro logic receiver. I only use stereo mode because of no space for rear speakers and besides surround sound just doesnt interest me like it does other people. I have some bookshelf yamaha speakers that handle the power and sound good enough to me for the fronts. I was still wanting to add some more punch to my setup. I have a pre out on my receiver for a subwoofer. would a powered sub work with this setup? or do I need to be using surround mode? I have a best buy and circuit city to shop from so any suggestions would be great!

Almost all subs have high level bypass. You take the left and right out from you reciever to the sub. It pulls the LF out and then passes the highs to a set of connectors on the back of the sub. You connect your L and R to these connectors!

No problem. I think you should rethink 5.1 thought

A capable subwoofer is a necessity for any audio system (unless you have true full-range loudspeakers, which most people do not) if you care about hearing everything your audio source (CD, DVD, vinyl, etc) has to offer.
Most people get turned off by the word 'subwoofer' due the stomach-churning overusage (or mis-usage actually) of folks who like to make their cars vibrate to the point of self-destruction by amplified low-frequency bass.
That, and inferior subs blasting bloated, mid-range bass in someone's house regadless of the fact that it's not properly calibrated or leveled in respect to the other speakers. (you know...'Hey look, I can make this glass vibrate if I set in on top of my sub!'). Yippee.

A good, calibrated subwoofer will make your two-channel set-up sound remarkably better, and let you hear things you never heard (or felt) before. Satellite and bookshelf speakers espescially benefit from this due to their limited (depending on your model) low end frequency response.

I'm not familiar with the subs offered at Circuit City or Best Buy, but I'm sure the good folks on this forum will steer you in the right direction in that respect.

ok definitely buying a sub. my receiver also has an option for 3 stereo mode. would adding a center channel help out also? I would love to have 5.1 but I just dont have the room here to properly posistion all the speakers.

Do you have a budget in mind? Also realize that Best Buy and Circuit City are in general not good places to shop for speakers.

best buy had a crappy selection so I went to circuit city. I ended up buying a panasonic 5.1 receiver for 199. I bought 2 mtx floor speakers (monitor12 model) for 179 a piece, a mtx sub for 199 and a pioneer center channel speaker for 69 because they didnt carry the mtx model. i found a few reviews on these mtx speakers and most people seemed happy with them and say mtx is hard to beat in its price range. any info from anyone here? I'm going to hook everything up and see how it sounds. I didnt want to spend that much more but if I can find something better for this price let me know.
