Today's CDs (12/16/02)

It's been a while since I started one of these.

Recent Spins:
Loose Fur - s/t (not the great album I was hoping for, but there are a few high points)
Minus 5/Wilco - "Down with Wilco" (just ok, as expected)
Drive Like Jehu - "Yank Crime" reissue (great great GREAT)

Stevevt - Sorry I missed you when you were in Chicago last week. I was basically stuck in the suburbs until about 11:30, so there was no chance of me making it to Schuba's in time. I hope you had a good time.

Not a prob.

We only stayed for the first few Bigger Lovers songs, but saw most of the other two bands.

Missed this yesterday, but I'm going to post for today.

Liars - They Threw Us in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top
Liars - Fins to Make Us More Fish Like
The Lot Six - Gwylo
Sonic Youth - Washing Machine
Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights (saw these guys play 2 Fridays ago)
Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something
Dance Mix (I made for a post-exam/birthday party last Saturday) - consists of Daft Punk, Le Tigre, Liars, The Faint, Belle and Sebastian, and various others

Yancey, how is The Roots new album? I really want to pick it up, but I haven't heard much about it yet. All I know is that "The Seed 2.0" is one of my top 10 favorite songs at the moment.

The Roots album is pretty great. Hip-hop wise, I still dig Missy and the Streets more for 2002, but it's solid. It doesn't approach Things Fall Apart or Illadelphia for me so far, but I'm warming up to it more and more.

Did you catch Calla at the Interpol show?

How's the new Lot Six album? They had one great single a couple of years ago...

I think the high points of Phrenology definitely surpass anything the Roots have recorded before. However, Things Fall Apart and Illadelph Halflife are more consistent albums. I think "The Seed 2.0" is the best track they've ever done...

Yeah, I did catch Calla. It took me a little while to get into them, but once I did I really enjoyed them. The only thing that bothered me: the bass was WAY too loud and drowned out the guitar occasionally. But when the guitar did come through, it was searing and I thought it was really original.

"Gwylo" isn't the newest Lot Six album. The newest one is called "Animals." I have all of their releases so far, and like that one the most. Very gritty and kind of chaotic, but it is all controlled. They change the pace with songs like, "The Tiniest Tin" and "My Son." I'm glad they do too, because it would get boring otherwise. They come off as a very strong band to me.
