I have GC so I wouldn't know. I'm buying a game for a 13 yr old boy. Costco had a lot for $8.99.
Any recommendations ?

Yes, the PS2 is backward-compatible with PS games.
What kind of games does he like?

The PS2 can actually enhance some PS2 games (faster loading and anti-aliasing). Works pretty well on some games (Vagrant Story and MGS come to mind). If you are going to use it for PSone games though, why not just buy a PSone for $49.99 and a bunch of games? Keep in mind the backwards compatibility doesn't work on a handful of games.

Remember you need a PSone memory card to save the PSone games, the PS2 memory card is ineffective for PSone games. I learned this the hard way when I had alreday sold my PSone and the memory card, and tried to play Final Fantasy IX...

You can't really go wrong with the greatest hits titles (for the most part).
