My Toshiba SD5109 died tonight. When I put in a disc now it no longer spins it and just gives me a disc error (tried several discs that I knew used to work). Doh!

Using my Malata as my main one now....

Try unplugging it overnight...might come back to life. But probably not.

Luckily, my Tosh. 3109 is still going strong after 3 1/2 years!

If it is your main player, I assume that you've been using it for awhile. How is it dead on arrival?

I was blown away though, it was a nice player, but I guess I've stressed it to its limits watching so many damn DVDs.

I'm going to see if I can't get it repaired, but it might be a good excuse to switch to another brand/player.

Any suggestions anyone ?

I haven't touched my Sony player since building an HTPC and only use a "real" player in the bedroom on a 27" TV. Are you ready for that?

That's what Geoff needs, something that can really suck up all his time.

The HTPC can produce a phenomenal picture, but man is it a time sink. Sometimes it seems as if you can spend more time tweaking and experimenting with it than you actually spend watching movies.

Actually, it'd be fine if you're the type that can just leave well enough alone. But if you were that kind of person, you'd probably buy a stand-alone player anyway.

If your into buying used equipment you can pick up a Sony DVP-S9000ES for about $550-600 (I believe an orig. MSRP of $1500). These players don't come with a 5 year warranty for nothing. The build quality is top notch. At about 30 lbs., they are built like tanks and will take a lot of wear and tear.

I'm very happy with mine and have never had a problem playing any dvd. Not only does it provide a great progressive scan picture, it also happens to be an excellent SACD player.

Not ready to do the HTPC route. I'm having problems enough with my current desktop PC.... Maybe in 2003

I'm seriously considering the Panasonic RP82, I've read a TON of raves online for it and after spending too much for my Tosh 5109 and having it go tits up on me I don't feel like dropping $500 plus on another player (I am on as much a budget as many of you are)... I might place an order for the Panny R82 and check it out. I'm told that they're getting harder to get.

Of course I'll be in Vegas for CES in Jan, so whatever I buy will probably cause me to say 'Doh! Why didn't I wait another month!?!'

In this thread there's some talk of the Panny CP72 being pretty similar to the RP82 (main difference is that the CP is a 5 disc changer)...if you're in a hurry it might be an option...but read the thread for pros and cons.
However, since you still have your Malata, why not wait and see what they have at CES...one of the distributors might even give you one to help you out!

Also the RP82 might be more readily available by then, so you won't be sitting around wondering when your RP82 will ship.

Hopefully mine will last until they make a set top player that has enough memory to eliminate layer change pauses.
