Right in Potter heaven
Over Thanksgiving holiday, I took my two youngest kids to see the new movie in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."
The kids were absolutely delighted, and I must say I was actually looking forward to seeing the movie since I had enjoyed the first Harry Potter movie so much. I was happy to see all the original characters. One of my favorite actors, Alan Rickman, plays the serious and gloomy Professor Snape.

With an appearance by another of my favorites, Kenneth Brannaugh, of "Hamlet fame," I was in Potter heaven. All the gang was there including Ronald, Hermoine and let's not forget my absolutely favorite character, Hagrid.

I really liked the movie, and it kept my attention even better than the first.

But I must say that I disagreed with some of the reviews of the movie, which stated it was more violent than the first episode in the Potter series.

One review I read said that certain scenes with a petrified Mrs. Norris (a cat), giant spiders, killer trees, and giant snakes, might be too scary for some kids.

While I agree that those particular scenes were kind of scary, I don't think a child of 7 or older would have had much trouble with them, especially if they were aware of the scary stuff in advance and made the decision with their parents to see it anyway.

Of course, final discretion always lies with parents. And if not sure, go see the movie yourself, or talk to someone who has seen it before taking your younger ones to see it. But it gets my approval.

I remember when I was younger and there was a big deal at school about if the Micheal Jackson "Thriller" video was too scary for us Grade 4s to watch. I had never seen it, but sent the permission slip home for my parents to sign. Now, I didn't like horror movies, and had maybe only ever seen one or two R rated movies in my life, and those were for language or non sexual nudity... so I was kind of worried... lots of other kids my age had seen horror movies, but I never wanted to.

A lot of girls in the class opted out, not wanting to see the video, but I wanted to anyways...

We went to the music room, and the teacher played the tape....

It wasn't scary one bit. It was highly entertaining, and the delightful black young man got my toes a' tapping!

I didn't see what all the fuss was over, I had seen scarier commericals on TV.

So you see ladies and gentlemen, the moral of the story is, Micheal Jackson is a good man who loves to help children, and you don't need permission slips to see him.

First of all, what possesses a person to write a letter to the editor about something like this? I think somebody has too much time on their hands.

And as far as they point they are making, I think they are wrong. They state their problem with the review of the movie was it saying it was "more violent" than the first one. And from what I can remember of the first one and having seen the second one last month, that certainly seemed the case to me.

However, I took my 4 1/2 year old daughter to it on Thanksgiving with my sister and she enjoyed it. She did get a bit scared toward the end but she still talks about the movie these days. And her comment when the cat was killed and blood was on the wall..... "Eeeeww....That's yucky. I wouldn't touch that." So she wasn't exactly petrified.

Actually the author has a newspaper column with the paper that is printed every Thursday. I guess thinking it's a letter to the paper is easy mistake since I post those more often.

Wasn't killed. I wish we did get to see it at the end though.
