GBA Zelda: Link to the Past: Multiplayer is the main draw?
Just got back from reading ign's review, as I was thinking about picking up this title...
As arguably the best traditional zelda game, I figured it'd be a straight port with some lame multiplayer thing thrown in, much like any of the Super Mario Worlds. But apparently the 4 swords multiplayer game is almost worth getting by itself...
It's got puzzles that can only be solved by cooperation. And it's smart enough to only show you the puzzles that can be solved by the number of players that are currently playing (2-4). Plus you can unlock dungeons and whatnot for the single player game... all in a gauntlet-style setting. Except that you can wander away from your group.
Sounds great. Anyone get this game yet and tried it out? It looks like I'll be missing out, though... I don't think I can convince 3 of my friends with GBA to get this game and link up to play a lengthy session. It might've been doable in highschool or college, but not now. I guess I'll try to convince my wife to play...

I'll be buying this game eventually but since I don't have a single friend with a GBA I don't think I'll be playing the multiplayer. It sounds really awesome though. They should try this in the Gamecube version and maybe even have AI controlled teammates for times when you don't have 4 people playing.

It HAS to be better than the lame one they keep putting in mario. okay maybe its not that lame but putting it in three times, come on.
as far as Zelda I would pay just to take Zelda LTP on the road everything else is just "fries with that". so you can unlock new dungeons in the single player mode. that is really cool.

So, as someone who never had an NES, can someone explain what the single player game is like? Is it just a hack & slash dungeon romp, more of an RPG, platformer or what? I take it that it's pretty different from the Zelda 64 games.

It's an action RPG. It does play fairly similar to the N64 Zeldas. There's more emphasis on battles as theres more enemies, but solving puzzles in dungeons to get keys and items and beat bosses is still the main point of the gameplay.
There's also less sidequests/talking to people.
BTW LTTP was on the SNES rather than the NES.

link to the past was an amazing game, and in retorspect, I probably enjoyed it more than either N64 Zelda game. Those I finished once apiece and was done with them, but I remember solving LTTP at least 5-6 times back in the day. Second best SNES game behind the obvious choice of Super Metroid (best game ever for any system, sorry Halo).

I just read the IGN review and I agree with fushishig that it sounds like it's the multiplayer mode that really shines. As I have no friends with one of these, let alone anyone who would want to spend that amount of time playing a linked GBA game, I'll pass for now. Maybe I'll pick it up down the road.
Metroid Fusion, Super Monkey Ball jr and Madden 2003 ($10!) should kep me busy on my next plane trip.

I picked up Zelda yesterday, and love it! Played the SNES version a few times. Like alot of you, I have knowone to play Four Swords with. It sucks because once you finish Four Swords, you get a special item you can use in Link to the Past.
