Yeah, the Killer and Hard Boiled are the best, but make sure to check out Once a Thief too. That one rocks.

I've been trying to get "once a thief" for a while but I think it's OOP. God of gambler & Return of God of Gambler are good also.

Natch. After those and A Better Tomorrow, Full Contact is excellent, Tiger on the Beat is very good, and City War is not bad.

What about "An Autumn's Tale", "City on Fire", and "Peace Hotel"?

Also, re: Once a Thief. Huge difference between that title and "John Woo's Once a Thief".

Oh yeah. "John Woo's Once a Thief" is a tv-movie. I think it's a pilot for that tv-series he made.

HONG KONG 1941
PRISON ON FIRE
PRISON ON FIRE II

Two early films where he has a substantial, but not the leading, role - both quite good:

THE LUNATICS
THE POSTMAN FIGHTS BACK

Too many others to name, but LOVE IN A FALLEN CITY (R3) is finally getting a release as part of the Shaw Brothers/Celestial deal. That's one I've been looking forward to for years now.

Objectively speaking, CYF is the best actor to ever come out of HK. He's been nominated 12 times for the annual HKFA Best Actor award, by far the most of any actor. Here are the movies for which he has gotten nominations for, in chronological order (bold are the ones where he actually won the award):

1984 Hong Kong 1941
1985 Women
1986 A Better Tomorrow
1987 City On Fire
1987 Prison On Fire
1987 An Autumn's Tale
1989 All About Ah Long
1989 God Of Gamblers
1991 Once A Thief
1994 Treasure Hunt
1995 Peace Hotel
2000 CTHD

That's Once a Thief

Must admit though I haven't seen it in stock anywhere for a while - DDDhouse, Coolala and Yesasia haven't got it at the moment

I think it has something to do with paintings, anyone ?
This is a major "Once a Thief" spoiler. People who haven't seen this movie yet shouldn't know this. Please edit.

CYF is known in the US for mainly his action roles. For drama and romance, I recommend All about Ah Long and Autumn's Tale.

Stealth: Wait for it. Hong Kong Legends has the rights for Once a Thief in England. Hopefully, they'll release it next year.

as far as I know there's only one very accessible version of Once A Thief, and that's the Megastar version.

http://www.asiandvdguide.com/HongKon...3/ms02098f.jpg

this version has subtitles in about 2000 different langauges, so I wouldn't worry about the subs (ok maybe not 2000, but a lot)

I ama big CYF fan...I'd recommend the Killer and Hard Boiled most of all. Then Once a Thief, A Better Tomorrow and Full Contact and Tiger on Beat (if you're looking for action).

If you want CYF drama, I recommend Hong Kong 1941 and Anna & the King.

As for comedy, action comedy is Tiger on Beat, but as for plain comedy, I like Fractured Follies, The Fun The Luck&the Tycoon, Diary of a Big Man and Greatest Lover.

Edit: Oh yeah, stay away from God of Gamblers...it's a good movie, but the only release is pan n'scan with burned in subs...I'd wait for a remaster.

Can't believe no one has menstioned Replacement Killers and The Corruptor!!
His Amercian efforts I have enjoyed, I know killer and hardboiled are class, but these two are great in their own way for me as well:
The Replacement Killers(great soundtrack as well)
The Corruptor
