Can anyone confirm that this unit comes region-free out of the box? (i.e., the remote control hack is sufficient but no hardware change is needed as the description at hkflix.com would suggest.)

From HKFLIX:
Both of these Toshiba players have been carefully modified by our expert technicians to play DVDs from any region, in either PAL or NTSC formats. Be wary of competitors who sell similar region-free players. We use a proprietary modification process and top-of-the line hardware to modify these players to meet our demanding requirements and specifications.
Presumably, these are NOT PAL players right out of the box. This also suggests HKFlix mods them to make them region free as well, though I didn't look at the VCDHelp link suggesting a remote hack.

The review states "setup menu allows to change region code"

Try a few local stores for this unit and check the setup menu on remote. Take a foreign coded DVD disk with you.

then buy it online

PS. I took two region 3 movies into store yesterday to verify a Malata unit (under different name) would indeed play these dvd's

Lint,

To my knowledge; most region 2 dvd's are PAL format.

"setup menu allows to change region code, so, no hack needed there. i tested with some region 2 dvds, it works."

http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.ph...arch&#comments

the toshiba unit uses the "Mediamatics chipset" like Malata 520/3600 units, and both those handle PAL's out of the box.

We need some confirmation on this, but I have a feeling the HKflix unit is just code free hacked.

This here says it needs hardware hack so that sucks :-(

http://www.geocities.com/regioncodefree/mediamatics/#[1-04]

[1-04] Can these players play a Region 2 PAL DVD, right out of the box?

The Malata players can, since they have automatic and manual region switching.

The other players need to be modified to circumvent the region lock:

For the JVCs & Toshibas, this can only be accomplished by installing a specific IC inside the player. There are no remote or firmware hacks that can make these players region-free.
