Custom DVD Rack HELP!!!

I have found a cabinet that the wife loves that I think I can make a DVD carosel out of. I just need some help with dimensions.
Not including any special packaging what is the min highth a shlf should be for alphas and snappers?
What is the avg dvd/inch in width(I am not at home to measure and need some info quick)? Thanks for helping with stupid questions

Height should allow for 8" from top to bottom..that will give you about 1/2" to work with (custom packaging). I have a custom DVD rack and was measuring just last night to build another.

Okay another question concerning the construction. This is wine rack that will be gutted a carosel built in it. My question is concerning the construction material, is MDFgood enough or should I use good stock ply wood such as pine or ash? Is 1/4" thick enough for an 19-19.5" round shelf that will be split in four and probably 3-4 tiers high? Thanks again
FWIW I found that about 15 dvds will fit in 9" space.

I would be concerned with "bowing" with a 1/4", unless you have plenty of support for it. Pine is okay, but I would recommend something a little stronger or thicker if you go with pine.
