Best 'International' DVD's of the year, so far.

A question was posed in the DVD Talk forum as to what the best Region 1 discs were. I was wondering what people here in this forum consider to be the best non Region 1 releases of the year are. Mine so far:

1. Spirited Away (even though flawed with a transfer issue)
2. Futurama Season 2
3. Sleeping Beauty (2-Disc French DTS edition)
4. Monsters Inc (2-Disc DTS edition)
5. Amelie (2-Disc DTS edition)
6. Battle Royale: Special Edition (2 Disc UK 'Tin' edition)

Others?

Yes, I too thought Amelie R2 was a very good DVD. Unfortunately, I don't have many recent releases so can't comment much. I will say that Red Dwarf, Season I (R2) would be on that list. Going to buy it for Christmas!

I would have put Spirited Away on my list, but the transfer screw-up negates any qualities it might otherwise have. My favorites would be:

Red Dwarf Season One (UK)
Godzilla-Mothra-King Ghidorah: Etc (Jpn 3 disc set)
The Italian Job (UK)
Salo (France)
Battle Royale (UK alternate cut version)

Hopefully, the Japanese releases of Kurosawa's Dreams and Takahata's Pom Poko will make my list as well when they come out next month. Not to mention the first wave of Shaw Bros films coming out in a couple weeks.

STRAW DOGS SE, far and away the best DVD released this year in any region (IMHO, of course)

By R1, you prabably mean US release, so I say the Canadian 3-disc R1 release of Brotherhood Of The Wolves is great.

4. Project A (Platinum Edition)
5. The Killer (HKL)

That's all I can think of right now.

Both the Spirited Away R2 Japan and R3 HK/Taiwan releases have the dreaded RED TINT SYNDROME! Which is exactly as it sounds, there is a reddish tint on the picture.

The Korean R3 release that's out Dec 7th will not have the tint though... That's the release I"m going to pick up. I can't wait long enought for a R1 release!

Thanks. I did remember reading that. I guess I was too enveloped in the movie to notice.

I'll second those nominations for the UK Straw Dogs and the French Sleeping Beauty, and I'll throw in the beautiful new Mondo Macabro editions of Alucarda and The Vampire.

Also, was the Italian DVD of The Leopard this year or last year? Same question for the UK editions of Three Colours: Red, White & Blue. All of 'em definitely deserve Best Of status.

And how about Best EVER international discs? If that's the case, let's not forget the French DVDs of Fantomas and my all time fave, El Dorado (no, it's not the Disney thingie)....

It was my first instinct to include the Three Colors Trilogy, but I checked and it was released in 2001. Awesome set though regardless.

I was looking at getting The Leopard from dvd.it - was wondering about the transfer.

The Leopard is an absolute must-have. The film's been very nicely restored and presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that, while not perfect by any stretch, is pretty damned gorgeous. Tons of extras too.

Thanks. I also picked up Take Care of My Cat (Korean film), which I absolutely loved. That definitely makes it in my top 10. Course, I haven't bought 10 "new" international DVDs this year.

Hi there
my choice is rather easy since it's a release of the best movie of an underrated director, Marco Ferreri, the title is Dillinger è morto - Dillinger is dead

Hi Gypo66
it's a region 2 - Italy - release.
3 audio tracks: italian, english and french
2 subtitles: italian and english
the audio track is mono
extras: intreviews with Bazzini - the co-writer - and Vulpiani - the director of photography.
I haven't received the DVD yet, so this is all I can tell you.

Nobody else will agree with this list, but what the hell! All are UK discs.

1) I'm Alan Partridge (2-disc edition, BBC)
2) Ghostwatch (BBC)
3) Ed Wood
4) The Killer (HKL)
5) Brass Eye
