I have both and even if Vice City is better looking I still think 3 is better. I'm stuck in Vice City and it seems the missions got hard fast. And to be honest to me it doesn't feel like Vice City is all that big. I know people are gonna freak when they read that but it just doesn't feel that way to me.
Vice does have great cars and a great soundtrack but I just hit a brick wall while doing missions and swore off the game for a bit. I played the heck outta 3 but now I'm wishing I rented Vice.

worth owning both, but graphics are improved on VC. Still, the gritty appearance of the original has a nice, authentic mafioso feel to it, so I would pick up Vice City now, then get GTA3 when it's released as a Greatest Hits disc sometime in the next year for $20

I'd get III first, since it'll save you a bit of money, and is still a great game! By the time you beat it, you'll probably be able to pick up a used copy of Vice City locally, or on eBay.

If you play Vice City first... you'll never really be able to 'go back' to III without comparing them in your mind.

Just a thought.

This is how I mostly feel about Vice City. The place might be larger in VC but that's because they're in different islands and you have to cross the bridges. Without the ocean, I think GTA 3 has a much more bigger city. Plus it has more variety from Chinatown to a Damn. Vice City doesn't have much variety, almost all of of the places look the same. Still a fun game, but it can't beat GTA 3. More replay value for GTA 3. I also think GTA 3's story is much more connected and has more depth than Vice City. Okay enough comparing and contrasting. They're both great games but GTA 3 is much more urrr.... better.

I'd go with Vice if the 80's interest you. Plus the vehicles/weapons addition should make the game more interesting than its predecessor. Just a thought. I would hold off on GTA 3 for one reason, price. It is a short matter of time before it will be $20, so unless you can get it now for that- I wouldn't get it at all.

You'll enjoy either one. I'm getting a kick out of riding on motorcycles and buying property in Vice City. It adds a little twist if you've played the original already. I would do as someone suggested and get Vice city now and pick up GTA3 when it's a greatest hits title.

You'll be able to find GTA3 cheaper than vice city right now. Play it first, ,then get Vice City. They're both great games, but you'll appreciate VC more after you play GTA3.

You'll like GTA3 better... It's missing the motorcycles and the choppers, but it's less glitchy and there are more missions and more of a variety in the missions. Make sure you pick that up sometime.
