'Beltway Sniper' Video Game Release Delayed

REDWOOD CITY, CA—Video-game developer Pixxel Arts announced Monday that it will delay the release of Beltway Sniper: Silent Strike out of respect for the victims of the recent D.C.-area shootings.

Above: A scene from Beltway Sniper: Silent Strike.

Based on the sniper attacks linked to suspects John Muhammad and John Lee Malvo, Beltway Sniper: Silent Strike was slated to hit store shelves Nov. 15. Last Friday, however, Pixxel top brass made the decision to postpone the game's release until March 2003.

"Upon discussing the matter internally, we decided that it would be inappropriate to unleash the intense sniping action and white-knuckle stealth gameplay of Beltway Sniper at this time," Pixxel Arts president Davis Conway said. "Out of respect for the victims of this horrific killing spree and their loved ones, we are delaying release of the mind-blowing first-person shooter until early next year."

Im glad they decided to wait on this one.

I imagine Nintendo had something to do with this. Aren't they the ones censoring that Hitman game?

umm.. ok. I don't have a problem with sniping games. But basing it on the actual sniping locations and victims.. that's just sick.

edit: heh heh.. I didn't notice the link was to theonion.com.. just ignore this comment

No. The creators of Hitman are censoring it starting with the GameCube one. It has nothing to do with Nintendo. They received outside presure to censor all versions.

They might as well make the sequel assasinating Kennedy. You can shoot from either the Book Depository or the Grassy Knoll.

Its pretty twisted to base a game like this on actual victims, but somehow I think this is a joke article. I've never heard of the game before.

Actually, that would be a prequel, wouldn't it? What's the big deal...they made a prequel of the Resident Evil and Zork games.

That would be correct. But it's the onion. They're not out to spare anyone's feelings.
