Mike Mendez' KILLERS - THE DIRECTOR'S CUT on DVD
I just come back from a screening of Mike Mendez' Killers - The Director's Cut. It's the version he submitted to the Sundance Festival back in 1997. As I knew only his latest effort THE CONVENT I was curious what his first feature would be like. It has lots of pop culture references, media criticism in the vein of NATURAL BORN KILLERS and a completely turn within the genres as seen before in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. As Mike Mendez himself introduced the movie I asked him later about the similarities to Rodriguez' movie and he said that it was a bad coincidence as they finished shooting when FDTD opened theatrically.
Mendez' also pointed out that after he sold KILLERS to different distributors in different countries he totally lost control over his product. It seems that there's currently no media (DVD/VHS) available which has not been severely cut and changed (also the soundtrack!). As I said before I didn't see any other versions before but this Director's cut is a really mean bastard with mean killers à la NBK, stupid cops and lots of flaws. It's like as Mendez tried to rip off Tarantino Coolness which failed. But there's lots of shooting going on which is shown in brutal ways. But I like THE CONVENT better.
Mendez confirmed that this Director's Cut is gonna be relased at the end of the year by German DVD label Laser Paradise including a director's commentary. As KILLERS was a low budget movie, there will be no extra stuff like deleted scenes or anything else.

Was this known on vhs atleast as Real Killers, with the two dudes on the box in misfit like face paint?
the escaped jail and took a seemingly normal family hostage in their home, only to find out it was kinda like a people under the stairs type deal?

...well... one thing is certain: it was not this movie, also - confusingly - titled Killers and available on DVD...
...ah!... EUREKA!... it is this movie, the German DVD of which I'm sure at least eleven people worldwide and the Director's mother are waiting for with bated breath...
