Birds of Prey -- New WB series coming this fall -- Discussion Thread

Just saw a preview for a new WB series starting in the fall.

Its titled Birds of Prey.

The preview said it was a new tale in the Batman Saga.

http://thewb.com/News/Special/0,8341,52997||,00.html

New Series
Hour Drama
Wednesday, 9/8c

In the days when Batman patrolled the dark streets and rooftops of
New Gotham, the world's master criminals were drawn to the city to
prove themselves against the greatest crime-fighter of them all.
Now, Batman has vanished, but New Gotham still seethes with
generations of criminals. For the good citizens of this dangerous
place, hope comes in the unlikely form of a trio of beautiful and
relentless heroines, the "Birds of Prey." In this exciting
action-adventure series, the Batman legend takes an unexpected
turn.

The story begins on a terrible night seven years in the past when
The Joker attacks the two women at the center of Batman's life:
Catwoman and Barbara Gordon, who fought at Batman's side as
Batgirl. With Catwoman dead, Batman mysteriously disappears from
New Gotham. Batgirl, now confined to a wheelchair, redefines
herself with a complicated double life ¿ by day, she is Barbara
Gordon, a teacher of computer sciences, but by night, she is
"Oracle" (Dina Meyer, Beverly Hills, 90210), a master of cybernetics
and weapons design, who monitors the activities of New Gotham's
criminals from her secret lair in the city's Clocktower.

Barbara takes under her wing the secret daughter of Catwoman and
Batman, young Helena Kyle. Helena has inherited Batman's strong
sense of justice, along with Catwoman's meta-human abilities.
Although she longs for a normal life, she quickly grows into the
fierce and beautiful "Huntress" (Ashley Scott, A.I.: Artificial
Intelligence). The pull between good and evil is strong within her,
and Barbara knows she must guide Helena carefully.

Into the lives of these two remarkable women comes an innocent
teenage girl named Dinah (Rachel Skarsten, Virginia's Run) who is
drawn to the Clocktower by powerful, haunting visions. Unsure of her
background, but impressed by her budding meta-human powers, the
two crime-fighters take Dinah in, and the trio is complete. They are
now the "Birds of Prey."

In this city full of crime and corruption, there is one honest cop.
Detective Jake Reese (Shemar Moore, The Brothers) is wrestling
with his own dark secret - he is the son of New Gotham's most
ruthless crime lord. Atoning for the sins of his father, Reese is on a
personal mission to fight crime wherever he finds it, and he refuses
to turn a blind eye to the strange events that always seem to involve
the mysterious Helena Kyle.

In the center of this mix of heroes and villains is Harley Quinn, a
brilliant madwoman who was the paramour of The Joker. Carrying
on his dream of creating a criminal empire, Harley uses her daytime
persona as a therapist to achieve her savage purpose - to release all
the lunatics from mental institutions and use the resulting chaos to
take control of New Gotham. Though Harley crosses paths often with
Barbara and Helena, they are unaware of each other's secret
identities.

As the leader of the "Birds of Prey," Barbara has gone from being
Batman's protégé to the leader of a new generation of crime fighters
who are determined to carry on his legacy. To her own surprise,
Barbara finds that the responsibility of family - even a self-made
family like these three amazing women - is ultimately just as
important as any mission to save the world.

From executive producers Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe
Davola (Smallville), Birds of Prey was written and developed for
television by Laeta Kalogridis (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) and is
produced by Warner Bros. Television and Tollin/Robbins
Productions based on the popular comic books from DC Comics.
I can't wait.. It looks and sounds pretty cool. *is a nut for Batman stories*

Possibly.. but I wouldn't think so.. Superman doesn't show up in the Batman comics all that much.

I could see them bringing in Batman, Robin, Nightwing occasionally.. I was really hoping that Birds of Prey would have the new Batgirl in it...
Is she in the comic? I haven't been reading Birds of Prey.

Um, not really.

I saw the four minute trailer that was released a few months ago. I must day I was seriously suspect when I heard the premise, but once I saw the footage I got to thinking this might not be so bad. I guess we'll see in the fall.

The only bad thing is the time slot....I'm pretty set on what I watch all night Wednesday, I'm never really committed to watching a whole season of a show when I had to tape it all the way through.

Anyone check out IMDB?

It lists Mark Hamill as the Joker. Could be a typo. He did the voice for the cartoon. Great job, I might add.

Sherilyn Fenn is listed as Harley Quinn. She looks the part. Ian Abercrombie will be Alfred. For those that don't know, he was Mr. Pitt on Seinfeld. Good choice.

The rest of the cast looks ho-hum. But if it's as good as Smallville, I will be watching.

Voice only. The actual Joker is just some stuntman that looks sillier than Caesar Romero in the original tv series. Still, as long as Mark Hamill does the voice, and we get to see a little bit of The Killing Joke on-screen.

Sherilyn Fenn is listed as Harley Quinn.
In the pilot. She just dropped out this week, so they have to recast.

Anyway, I think it might end up decent. That trailer that came out a few months back didn't look all that bad, and before that I read an interview with one of the producers, who I think actually wrote for some of the Batman comics, so knows a little bit about the characters (although they completely changed Black Canary, so she's basically unrecognizable, and used a pre-Crisis Huntress--who I wasn't that familiar with to begin with, so it doesn't matter to me). The show could easily go either way, though.

I just read somewhere that due to scheduling conflicts, she's out [dammit ]. So now they're going to have to reshoot. Someone is posting the pilot somewhere. Once it's done and i've watched it, i'll post a report.

I read somewhere (maybe dark horizons?) that due to Warner greenlighting the Superman vs. Batman movie, Batman is basically going to be off limits in BOP. I also remember reading an interview with one of the producers awhile back and he said that if the first season does well, then a trip to Bludhaven during the second season to see what Nightwing has been up to has not been ruled out.

well, i just got done watching the pilot. needless to say, WB owes me 50 minutes of my life. i realize that there's a certain amount of bastardization to make things in a certain "niche" friendlier for the mass market -- but this is ridiculous.

Let's start at the top shall we...

Spoiler:
Negatives...

Helena's the daughter of Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle? Riiiiight.

Helena's costume. [or lack thereof] She runs around NOT wearing a mask just an outfit with a horrible looking victorian lace "trench coat" which Helena says is trendy & she can go to the clubs afterwards. Then again, they explain it away by having Helena say she didn't want to dress like her parents & she didn't want to be in the family business. To which Barbara replies "It's not the mob." Ha...Ha.

So, let me get this straight...Dinah now has the power of a precog? Where do they dream this stuff up??

Not only that, but lets get the ages straight...Barbara is supposed to be the "mentor" figure [or at least Helena's guardian]. Yet, Barbara & Helena looks to be the same age.

Batman does make an appearance. Blink and you'll miss him.

The villain? Totally forgettable.

The plot NOT revolving around the origin? Weak. Not that the origin is that strong either...

The version that I saw, had Sherilyn in it -- but I read that she's out. I don't know who's replacing her.

Positives...

Joker shooting Barbara. About the only thing faithful to the comic book.

The earrings. The only part of the costume they got right.

[sarcasm]

But they're HOT chicks and they KICK ASS.
[which i'm sure is what WB is counting on...at times like this I curse Alias & Smallville -- which is what this is trying poorly to be an amalgam of.]

[/sarcasm]

I wasn't expecting a work of brilliance. In fact, [being a fan of the comics] I was looking forward to this. But, I don't know if this'll be on my fall viewing schedule.

rougue588, i agree with most of what you said. i fail to see why they take a perfectly good premise and screw it up.

Sounds a lot like Charmed...

It might be worth a shot though. I never read any of the Batman comics except for Robin so I won't too much to be outraged about. Except the bizarre Huntress origin and the lack of constumes.

Re: Huntress' origin

Do some homework before complaining. That *is* Huntress' origin....circa 1976-1980. :-)

The current Huntress is a replacement character for the original. She was Bruce and Selina's daughter on Earth-2, one of DC's parallel earths. When DC did away with the multiple earths in 1986, Helena Wayne was killed off. Helena Bertinelli joined the scene a few years later.

I'm assuming they're using this version because it gives them a more direct tie to Batman. Also, Helena Wayne was just a much cooler character than Helena Bertinelli ever will be. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to be as well fleshed out as a character due to the sporadic nature of her appearances over the years.

Okay, I've watched the pilot, here are my thoughts:

Spoiler:
The promo blurb spills many of the details that are in the pilot episode.

I did find some irony in that Ashley Scott (The Huntress AKA Helena Kyle) who played Asha on Dark Angel, where a genetically enhanced female with a bit of cat DNA mixed takes mission orders from a wheelchair-bound corruption fighter with an alter-ego of "Eyes Only", is now a meta-human with a bit of feline mixed in from her mother's genes (mother being Selina Kyle, Catwoman) and takes marching orders from a wheelchair-bound crime fighter, Barbara Gordon who was once Batgirl.

I found the Dinah Lance character to be a dash of the youthful optimism needed to revitialize the partnership of Barbara Gordon (Oracle) and Selina Kyle. She's dependable in a crunch, and does provide a bit of comic relief from her inexperience and enthusiam.

Babs is very serious, given up on love (rolls away from a burgeoning relationship), focused on fighting crime in Batman's absence, and taking no crap from Helena. In her day job, she appears to teach college; at night, she's on the prowl for crime activities, does the research, and sends in the Huntress to save the day. The Joker does shoot her in the back, paralyzing her from the waist down, making her wheelchair bound. You do get to see her in her Batgirl outfit, and in action (not too impressed with that scene, but it's no big deal since she's not Batgirl anymore).

A heir to the Wayne fortune, Helena wants nothing to do with the Wayne fortune, harbors ill feelings towards Bruce Wayne for not being there for her (but he has no idea she's his daughter). Her abilities allow her to jump from rooftop to rooftop rather easily, and she can land safely from high jump-off points. She has cat-vision which enables her to see better than human in low light conditions. She's very quick/cat-like in that respect. Oh, and she's got a dark streak, not afraid to make snide remarks about doing some in with her powers, likes to apply wise-cracking sarcasm to situations.

Alfred makes an appearance, verifies that Wayne is bankrolling the Birds of Prey operation. I think the writers changed Alfred's last name from Pennyworth to Pennywell.

You do see Batman, but mainly from the back, with the cowl and the cape hiding any other details. Capes and crimefighting don't mix, it was painfully obvious in the fight scenes in this pilot. Capes could get you killed (IMHO). The Joker doesn't look too sinister, rather he looks like Patrick Dempsey in Joker make-up in the fuzzy headshots of the scenes. These are all from flashback scenes that detail what happened to Batgirl, and perhaps what caused Batman to leave Gotham City.

Harleen Quinzel is a psychotic psychologist who has Helena Kyle as a patient, and Helena's references to her father are veiled, yet true, but Harleen doesn't quite put 2 and 2 together at this stage. Too bad Sherilyn Fenn bailed out of the role of Harley Quinn, it looked like she was going to play it pretty much from low-boil simmer to over-the-top.

The cop character didn't do much for me.

I don't know how it'll do in the ratings, but I'll enjoy getting to see Dina Meyer (Oracle) on a regular basis.

According to TVGuide.com --

"Actress Mia Sara, best known for her role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, has been tapped to replace Sherilyn Fenn as the bad girl on the WB's fall superhero series Birds of Prey, TV Guide Online has learned. Fenn dropped out due to scheduling conflicts."
