Any cover that is under 150dpi is not really fit for quality printing. So please use you own discretion before printing out any cover!

Feel free to post cover requests and links to other covers in this thread.

Bringing my request over from the last thread:

Sebastian: Any chance you could upload the "kneeling" Gladiator custom that you made? ... At least I think it was you!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are right it was me, and I can host it for a while but you know that its made to fit a double alpha case right?

I assumed it was for a double Amaray (the thinner style?) but I can probably edit it fairly easily. I'd really appreciate it if you'd put the image up for download, even if it's only for a day.

Here's the one I did for the 2-Disc edition. I added the title to the spine and corrected the "Disc 2" information. But left the special features section alone. This is my first semi-custome cover and it's for the slim, 2-disc, keepcases (eg. "Gladiator" and "Star Wars: Episode 1")

Maybe you could put something like Collector's Edition on the top/or Special Edition WHICHEVER YOU LIKE BETTER....

Boy....I will be watching you.....you better be done with this soon

JJE-187
10-29-02, 03:46 AM
Dr. Zaius I think it looks amazing but one little change would make it better to me. Erase the credits at the bottom and put "2-Disc Limited Collector's Edition" with "Widescreen Edition" beneath that in the blank space where the credits were. If you really don't want to do that then I would gladly take the cover as it is.

(Yes I know alot of people don't like plastering "Widescreen" all over there covers but I like Widescreen movies and want everyone one who sees my collection to know the choice I made when a studio released 2 different versions)

Dr. Zaius, that looks fantastic! Any chance you could modify the back to make it useful for us 3-disc set people (either by removing any mention of the features altogether or by listing the appropriate 3-disc info)?

Dr. Zaius
10-29-02, 08:11 AM
Wow, thanks. To answer some questions...

The poster art I used was made by Drew Struzan and was originally commissioned by Steven Spielberg shortly after the original release of E.T., and it supposedly was a favorite of Spielberg's, but for one reason or another it was not used.

I'll make a new version with the "2-Disc Limited Collector's Edition" & "Widescreen" on the front cover, as well as one using standard poster art.

Jolikai, if you could e-mail me the appropriate 3-disc info, I can generate a version for the 3 disc set.

Dr. Zaius, outstanding cover. That plain blue, split spine bugs me every time I look at my collection. I want a copy too.

Ok, maybe I sound like an idiot, but is there ANY other site similar to DVDCoverart.com? Not just one or two personal creations, but a collection of hundreds of custom and snapper covers? It seems like I just discovered that site when it went down. Now that I've discovered a cheap local source for double disk cases Ireally want to dump some of my less favorite cases.

Hey, sorry I havent posted in a while, I have been working on those Batman covers but Exams hit me so I had to backburner the covers. I also have plans to make "Exorcist Thrillogy" matching covers. I just need to get those Batman covers done first! Also if anyone has suggestions as to what covers I should do next please give them to me. (Keep in mind that if you ask me to make covers for movies that I dont have it will probably be harder.)

Hope to have those covers up soon

I've been hard at work converting all the snappers in my collection (200, or so, of which are snappers) with about 90 completed so far. My practice is to match the spines so they look good in a row, on the shelf. I also always remove the ugly UPC seal and center the cover image for proper display on a keepcase. I try to stay away from stretching the spine image as much as possible. This requires a good deal of hand blending of the spines on some titles (see 'Kronos', 'Cat Women' and 'Spaceship to Venus').

Here's a small sample of the work (play/fun) highlighting the 'Image Entertainment' classic Si-Fi series in my collection.<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/8pak6.jpg>

I would also like to see a custom cover for Spider-Man. I prefer the cover art for the fullscreen edition but with the "Widescreen" logo on top.

Hi Sebastian, thanks for the cover. I was wondering if you can make another alternate cover for those of us who weren't lucky enough to get The Follow on our DVD. Could you add a note under the description saying something like what it says on the DVD:

Most of you are familiar with my Custom Halloween covers. Well I've been working with TesOne (webmaster of www.onegoodscare.net)

He has created a great new collectors case that will be produced by Paul Champagne and is limited to 300 pieces.

I have worked with him in creating custom Halloween covers to match the Case and they also have matching spines that when put together create a familiar Halloween image.
These are by far the best custom cover work I have done to date.
Goto www.onegoodscare.net and check it out.

My Covers are available for free download as well.

He's also running a contest and the winner will get:
The Case, my Custom Covers professionally printed and placed on Orange Amaray cases.

Thanks Videophile,

I've posted several of the covers I've dressed in the past. Last week I had a request for the custom '1956 Godzilla' cover I put together. Problem is, I only have 10MB of web-space so I've been able to post only one cover at a time. On top of that, it seems more people wanted the 'Godzilla' cover than I thought and I received this email from my ISP.

" Dear EarthLink Member,

Your free member Web site has been popular this month -- maybe a little too popular. According to our records, your Web site has exceeded 75% of your traffic allotment this month.

If your free Web site traffic exceeds 1024 MB, the site will become unavailable until the beginning of the next month. During that time, no one will be able to access your site and you will have only limited abilities to publish to or modify the site's contents. "

I love the way they call it a "FREE" member Web site. Last time I looked I was paying a monthly bill?

I nearly reached the 1024MB limit amd was compelled to remove the 'Godzilla' cover. Since I rely on this web-space for my dealings on eBay I can't afford to be shut down.

I tell you all this to point out what a loss the downing of DVDcoverart is. It is a VOID that must be filled. If Matt doesn't pick up the ball and run someone else should. Who????????

I spend hours and hours dressing these covers and would love to have them enjoyed by others.

Anyone have nice customs for the Dirty Harry series? I have the Clint Eastwood Collection versions and can't stand the artwork (specifically the background and "CE Collection" border).

Or how about matching customs for the Mad Max series?

I'm also looking for the following snappers [must have properly repositioned covers and spines]:

Bullitt
The Right Stuff
The Mummy (1959 Hammer version)
The Outlaw Josey Wales (Custom with CE Collection specs)
Pale Rider (Custom with CE Collection specs)
The Getaway (1972 version)
A Walk to Remember
Executive Decision
Risky Business
Night Shift
Waiting for Guffman

And 2-disc set covers (Amaray or Alpha) for:

One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest
True Romance

Appreciate any help anyone can give me.

John,
I put my site up to take some of the slack missing when DVDCoverArt went down. I have a forum for posting covers and requests and I had a page of covers for downloading (30+) but not everyone was taking advantage of it. I know my site wasnt as large as Matts was but I tried to make the forum as informative as I could so people had another venue for their covers.

I can tell you from experience it's going to be extremely difficult to run a site like Matts. The cost is huge and there's no way to profit to cover the cost fo running the site.

For his bandwidth needs he needs a host with at 20-30gb of bandwidth a month and that'll cost around $30-$50 a month to run from a reliable webhost.

I have shopped around for a host so I know the costs and the needs to have a site running. My site had a third of the covers Matt did and I was approaching my max of 9gb of bandwidth.

I've been trying to find a way to limit downloads per person per day but so far nothing has come up. RKnewbow was working on this for me, but with my site temporarily down it's hard to do.
If a system like that cant be implemented that my site will never host that many covers.

I LOVE making custom covers and enjoy seeing the work of others and making it readily available, but in reality I can't afford a $40.00 a month bill just to enable people to download covers. That's the harsh reality of it.

A pay to download system would work but I don't think that's the way to go IMO.

I just highly doubt that Matt's site will return like it once was. Unless of course he's independantly wealthy. I know most everyone here (myself included) was saying they would contribute funds to keep the site alive and that may work but how do you determine who pays and who doesnt...?

It'll be difficult without help in some way that's for sure.

Ideas I had:

All we really need is a central web site - showing thumbnails of everybody's work - and linked to resources elsewhere. Each person would be responsible for finding a host for their own covers. It would be an index of all the covers that are available out there, and everybody would be sharing the server loads. For those without hosts, they could provide their e-mail or chat meeting info for peer-to-peer sharing.

This central site needs a forum.
DVD Talk (if willing) could set up a cover art forum, so each cover discussion can have its own thread; rather than extensions of one long thread.

I can do that. I have 3gb of space on my host server. Sebastians 2 Hellraisers are posted like that on my site.
The only thing is what about the people that have no place to put them for downloading?
But once my site is back up I would be more than willing to do that.

Then those people can have links to their e-mail addresses for cover mail-outs, chat info for file sharing, or find a friend who'll host for them. There could possibly be links to free or inexpensive hosting services on the central site.

Another idea I had was to keep a central request list for covers. Requests in discussion threads get buried too quickly. I'd like to see a single list of outstanding requests, and who needs/wants them. People can add their name to each request, so you'll know how desperately some of them are wanted. Plus, the date of the initial request would be listed, so you'll approximately how long the person has been asking for a needed cover. Once a request has been filled, it'll get taken off the list, or marked with a filled. There would be room in the request list to specify variations. It could get ugly if an artist has worked hard on a cover, but hasn't met the expectations of the requestor. Any ideas?

We really do need some central site, even if it is purely communicative in nature and not a vehicle for mass downloading. A database/catalogue of available covers with links to the people who have them, would be terrific. Some will have their own websites for this and others just an email account. Either way at least I know the cover I'm looking for exists and I can then contact the person(s) who has it. And as Disc-Flipper mentions, a central "wish list" where everyone can input their requests and we can see what is really in high demand.

The forums and threads could be open to the public, but downloading restricted to paying members. There are enough of us that I'm sure the cost could be kept reasonably low. If the site were just $3 a month, than 20 members would cover the prices speculated. And for those who couldn't afford or justify the expense, they could always just use the public forums to facilitate person-to-person exchanges. And of course such a site could also incorporate some of the ideas Disc-Flipper and others have proposed.

Sebastian
11-01-02, 02:44 PM
I think a paysite isn't a bad idea, but I think it would be better to make it a kind of pay per view system. We just have to figure out how much to take for a single download. Maybe 25cent? That way you don't have to be a member to download, and I think this will be more likely accepted then having to pay a monthly fee. I would also suggest a rating system, one rating from a "professional" judging the quality and then a user based rating were everony that downloaded the cover can vote...

Long time listener, first time caller.

How about using a file sharing program (I would suggest limewire for its mac and pc support) and just adding a tag on the end? I did a search for "[dvdcs]" and nothing popped-up. I have a couple I'd be willing to throw on myself. If you had a centralized space with thumbnail previews you could also add a number code so people could search for the version they like.

Sample:

[dvdcs] Bull Durham 23514

ChrisK

Follow-up:

I placed the following 4 files on limewire:

[dvdcs] Bull Durham
[dvdcs] European Vacation

Feel free to hop on and give it a try.

I still like the idea of having one main central site and having links to various satellite sites.

And maybe there could be a cover printing service or something (like whats offered on that one site...i forget the name).

I'm sure some of us wouldnt mind paying to have some covers printed if it was going to help keep a good archive of custom covers online.

I think the thumb nail site idea is best, but the fileshare one is good too, and both should be used...

In the event that someone makes a cover, and have no space to host it, then someone else will have to host it, or the link could be to the person's details. (email addy, ICQ UNI, ect.)

Here is what we should do, have one central site that has a collection of thumbnails. Then everyone can share them on kazaalite. There could even be a link on the site to download kazaalite (make sure to get kazaaspeedup too!) then we could have tags on the cover files that are number codes. so people looking for them will find them. I for one am online ALL THE TIME and I have a university connection, so I would be willing to host them until everyone else gets them downloaded.
Just a suggestion

Another option would be to post the covers to a news server... Almost all web access comes with some access to a newsserver that is local to the ISP... Then the creators of covers will post them once, and the news network will distribute them to all the other newsservers, where they should be around for at least a few days for people to get before they expire...

it is hardly as convenient as a web server, but it's an efficent thing bandwidth wise...

Cover designers can make the covers available by whatever means they choose - be it by an FTP, File Sharing Utilities, Chat File Sharing, Usenet, E-Mail attachments... but they should all be showcased on one website with alphabetized and indexed thumbnail samples, along with information how to obtain. Multiple download methods could be specified for each cover if the author desires. As soon as customcoverart.com or dvdcoverart.com get back on their feet, we should start working on it. There could even be mirrors of the main site, in case one of them should go down. The site's bandwidth would require viewing of all the thumbnail files, but even those could be restricted to separate links, so not all of them would be accessed each time. Sound like a plan?

it is hardly as convenient as a web server, but it's an efficent thing bandwidth wise...

Somebody should apply for an alt.binaries.pictures.dvd.covers.custom group. But how many new internet users are familiar with decoding binaries off newgroups?

I think we could make up a nice tutorial in the 1st post of this thread on how to do it, its not too hard

Could someone maybe post a summary of all the various E.T. covers that have been made, or are in the works?
Thanks.

Sounds good to me. I wouldnt have to limit thumbnail views at all. According to my last viewing of my site stats, Downloading of the covers accounted for 80% of my bandwidth usage. Thumbnails, no matter how many would not be a problem at all for my site....I am getting upset from not having it back up yet and may have to go with yet another host....But no matter what it will be back up within this month...

BizRodian: Your e-mail never showed up. Maybe try again? Or do you have AIM? I could sent it to you on there...

Really Bus? that's a shame. I don't have AIM, only ICQ, and I can get Yahoo Messenger. AIM is impossible though :)

Anyways, you CAN mail me the cover. The problem is that my mailbox gets filled with spam very very often, and I only have six megs of space. So if it bounces back, then there's too much spam. But try anyways. If we can't get it to work, we'll try something else :)

Hi Guys

All of the suggestions for the dvd cover site sound workable. HOWEVER - some of us (this means me) are computer illerate.. Remember all the trouble I had learning how to print the covers originally? My only request is that whatever decision is made as to the final site, it is simple to use and with very exact instructions.
FTP, File Sharing Utilities, Chat File Sharing, Usenet

These words scare me!

I love it! Great cover Json.

BTW, how is the video quality of all the "Friday the 13th" DVDs?

about using newsgroups to share the covers, it might be easier to post them in a group that is allready established (alt.binaries.dvd maybe) rather than gettting a new one started. it seems like opening a new one would lead to more problems of availability, since less peoples news servers would be likely to have it. using an established group would hopefully make the scans more available.

...and a request :) anyone happen to have good covers for any of these:
dark city
the cell
friday
twister (dts)

thanks

Great cover Jason.

Now if only Paramount would release Friday discs worthy of the covers that they're in.

Hey everyone I started a New Thread as I was instructed to do by JJE-187 while he's gone

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=248231

Also I started a thread solely for the discussion of places to post covers

Got it, Rammsteinfan! Looks sweet! Thanks. Now I have to decide if I want to try and print it myself or give Kinko's a try.
:)

BTW, sorry for the delay getting back. Halloween on I was kind of preoccupied with new car problems and fell behind on online stuff. It's all good now.
