the xbox versions are pretty cheap:
SSX Tricky ($20 at amazon)
Star Wars Starfighter $15 at target)
etc..
are those games significantly better on the xbox than on the ps2?

Tricky - No. The controller scheme for pulling tricks was made for the PS2 controller. I didn't like the way it was laid out for the Xbox and GameCube.
Starfighter - Yes if you are a fan of the game. The Xbox version is a special edition and has extra stuff.
Don't know about Tony Hawk 4. Its missing online play on the Xbox, but has it on the PS2 if that is important to you. It will look a little better on the Xbox, but I don't know if its going to have any extras over the other versions.

No. In fact some games might be better on the PS2 than the XBox and some might be better on the XBox than the PS2 and some might be almost the same.
I would look into the game before deciding which one to get.

I take it you've played the PS2 versions of the games before since you're talking about "upgrading" to Xbox versions.
Why bother? Save your money and buy Xbox games you haven't played before. There are plenty of cheap titles out now (PGR, Buffy, Hunter, etc)

I agree with Thanh. Even if they are a little better, chances are it's not worth re-buying the game to play again. Spend you money on games that you have never played before. I wouldn't always say that the XBOX version is "upgraded" either. Some games are better on XBOX, others are better on PS2. I would have to say that in terms of graphics, XBOX usually has an advantage, but that doesn't always make it better. Look at Need For Speed for example. The XBOX version does look better, but it doesn't come close to recreating the speed of the vehicles like the PS2 version. On the other hand, games like Starfighter, play equally good on both systems, but the XBOX version looks a little prettier, and has some extra content. In that case I would choose the XBOX version. It's at the point now where you really should wait for reviews on both versions before you decide which one to buy.
