Weird... Woke up today and my smallball team page was still showing 9*.

Challenged my team with my scrub teams and it was showing 8* in the play windows.

Just looked at my team page again, and it is updated with new games and it still shows 9*...

if my team truly is at 9* still, this will be 20 hours I've held my 9th *

Just checked your team and they are showing 9*.
Remember what others have reported that their team will fluctuate between 8 & 9* within the same day even without training. I mean they can go down to 8* and then for no apparent reason go up to 9* again. This actually happened to me. Anyways, congrats.

Dancinns: The score submitted for my game with the Porkers yesterday is wrong. This is the game and the score, Porkers beat me up bad.

BIG 10/22/02 Pork Chop Express 15536 PCE 12:20 L

The score and game that is recorded for the Monsters/Porkers is the Pig's game versus the Gay team. I scored one more run than the GAY team did and want the proper credit! :)

I can see how this mistake happened. The GAY team has "Big Gay Pete", I have "Big Pete" West. However my "Big Pete" is not, I repeat, not GAY. My Pete is a righty, the GAY teams Pete is a lefty. This is not my "Pete" playing for both teams as a switch hitter!

My largest victory was 80-0. I've heard of scores over well over 100 though...

[me sounding like DarkElf]My biggest margin of victory was on August 22nd. A 1* team challenged me, and after scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the first with no outs, he turns 2. Then I reel off 86 straight runs before he makes the third out. Final score 92-0 after one complete. Very few home runs in that game, like 6 or 7, IIRC...[/me sounding like DarkElf]

:)

The only thing I can tell you about my 80-0 game was that it was Aug 17 against Woman I Love, a 1* team. I hit 6 home runs and A.C. struck out all 3 batters he faced.

No. Closest I've come was about 3 bricks from the top. But I don't hit long home runs in training. Fred's team has some guys that can probably clear that wall though.

No here either. I have 3 players who hit over 600' in the cage when forced power, one of which hits 380' homeruns in games, but they have never come close that I am aware of. Did I mention that I hate that stadium? ;)

I actually kind of like it. If you're prepared for it, it's not really that hard for a power team to win in that stadium...

I've seen The Masher hit one 382 ft over the wall. Mostly my guys bounce it off of it though, but a few have the potential to do it.

Yeah, I agree with you. I have a winning record in both of the new stadiums, (except when playing WhoGirl in the Brickyard), but I still dont like them. I like my games to be more like real baseball, you know like the World Series. ;)

Not that I really care, but if the following were the scores for two games you initiated against me today, which one of these games would you report the score for?

BIG 10/23/02 Rhode Island Generals 17370 RIG 4:1 W
BIG 10/23/02 Rhode Island Generals 18156 RIG 6:4 W

The second was reported. Wonder if that would have been the case if I had lost the second game. Sure, it gives me two more runs scored, but it gives me three more runs against. Maybe I should start initiating multiple games and reporting the score for the one I do the best in. ;)

Team performance Question:
Why do ya'll feel that players sometimes perform very differently from season to season? I mean one season a player may lead your team in homeruns, but not be near the top the next. And I am considering different training, but what if the training for each player was the same and consistently so over the course of many seasons? I would think that the best players will always perform the best when trained accordingly, but thats not always so. Why?
I have one odd thought, but would like to hear any other opinions.

Great question! I track my players stats for each season, and I've seen pretty big swings from one season to the next. I've often wondered if they don't build in some variable for whether a player will have a good season or an off season. I doubt they do, but it would explain it.

I have also tracked my player stats each season and have observed skill shifts. I was told by Greek Wizard last March that there was a slump factor in the formula for each players performance. I have observed greater shifts in batting skills and in running. I'm not sure how much of this is due to my training schedule or to the lil' green guys. Later,

The game is not quite finished yet, but the Ballers do get a win vs. First Division leading Death Valley Destroyers. This will leave a 3 way tie for first and at least a 5 or 6 way tie for second. Very close race so far. Now if I just didnt lose to Bad Mojo earlier today I too could be in first. :( (good game though twikoff).
Should be a great season.

I see when you came back for revenge it even got worse. :(

Actually there is nothing really wrong wrong with your team, I watched the game and it could have gone either way. If this is your #1 pitcher, you mentioned you had a alternative pitcher, you may want to try him. Four out of 6 games you put up enough runs normally to win. Scoring 14 runs and losing is terrible though. I would look at either changing pitchers or making sure he gets more training. It did look like most of the scoring against you is with the long ball. The only thing overall was your guys looked a little slow, but some of mine right now are as fast as Penguins! :D

Oh BTW: "Welcome to the Premiership!" rotfl

DarkElf
10-24-02, 02:09 AM
Premiership is gonna be rough on pitchers this season. I expect many teams to score 14 runs and still lose.

And of course with all these high scoring games, leave it to me and criptik (who normally have slugfests) to have a 5-4 game...

DarkElf
10-24-02, 02:24 AM
criptik put his team on vacation before submitting the score for our game this evening, so I'm going to enter the score myself since the vacationing team can't do it (without taking themselves off vacation).

(Game 20973, DD 5, HS 4)

DarkElf
10-24-02, 02:30 AM
So I don't know about this 48 hours without training thing...

I did great yesterday, but had a very rough day today. I finally had to break down this evening and train so as to not get crushed in DTSL games. I understand there is probably a bit of lost efficiency, but at the expense of losing too many games on the off day. In the end, I think the W-L record is more important than a slight bump in training efficiency.

So as a compromise, I may try to do a 36 hour training cycle. I guess we'll see what happens...

I hate playing in the intel stadium. My pitcher gives up 4 or 5 homers every game. Put me in the brickyard or Fox and I do considerably better.

I think it's just that our teams are improving, and now it isn't just my team that is hitting HRs.

I'm still conducting my experiment to see if throwing training for a pitcher makes any difference or not with home runs allowed. So far, there's no significant difference. Even my main pitcher, who doesn't train in the throwing pen (last in that category) is getting shelled.

So I just don't think there is much you can do about it. Accept that you'll give up 3-5 HRs a game and improve your defense to try to minimize the number of guys on base when the HR is hit.

Anyone else have any theories/thoughts?

Could just be my ramblings, but my teams seem to do better when they are trained more in fielding and throwing. So if I train hitting and running for a couple of days I give up more runs. Of course I then will also score less, so I guess its a wash. For example I put up 17 against X-File while hitting 8 homeruns, but I still lost because I gave up 21 freakin runs and 11 homeruns. This came after two days of hitting & running throwing. But who knows.

jonw9
10-24-02, 02:31 PM
See, I guees that is how my training goes. I practice hitting and i lose by a lot, practice fielding and I lose by a lot more! :D

On the other hand, do some people just seem like smarter runners? I know with speed comes knowledge, but some people sit on 3rd, wait for the pop fly to almost get caught, run halfway home, then go try to tag up after the catch.

But do you think there is any correlation betwee having a great defense and your pitcher giving up fewer home runs? It obviously makes no sense in real life, but in SmallBall, you never know.

Yeah, but with speed comes a bloated ego.

Twice in two games I had a really fast guy hit a fly ball that was dropped, but he was thrown out at 3rd trying to stretch it into a triple. And in both instances, the guy after him hit a homer...

Yeah thats exactly what I think. Dont know how true that is of course. There have been many other examples of weird correlations before, like a pitchers running ability and his pitching speed for example.

I like the one where its men on 1st & 2nd, with the slower runner on 2nd, (usually the last batter), Batter nails one of the wall. Runner from first tries to go 1st to 3rd and is thrown out. The runner from 2nd is then nailed at home plate. Then the next guy goes yard. Happened to me twice recently. :(

Give a example from yesterday.

Good Fellas plays me they win 10-1.

A few hours later (no training or changes) I play them and win 10-1.

I've really come to figure that when you get to a certain level it's how much you can hit! I think the only thing on a pitcher that matters is how long he can hold the skill. In that instant that the computer actually computes the game their must be some random calculations based on the teams skills that are computed and a result is given. Given that it is random, the possiblity of being on the short end mulitple times in a row is increased. It's like losing a Craps!

Depends. Mine gets up to 108, then he'll lose 4-5 mph the first day.

But after that, he drops very slowly and doesn't go below 100 for at least 3 weeks.

Your initial loss is different than constant loss, at least for some players.

If he does indeed lose 4-5 every day, and drops 20 mph in 5 days then yeah... you need a new pitcher :)

My team is such a mess right now...after looking at my gf's pitcher i looked at mine.

he was around 105 and then i waited 48 hours to use a QT ticket. so 2 days later i throw my pitcher in the pen and he's at 94!

so he's gonna be out of there and my 2nd ranked pitcher only throws 75!

i have two lefties in the oven and they wont be done for another week or so!

and i have to juggle all of this with the league games!!

ARGH!!! DAMN YOU SMALLBALL!!

Okay how about this one:
I asked before about changes from season to season in performance. Has anyone seen a change in a players ability from season to season, in either skill ability or retention. I swear that my main pitcher does not always maintain his skill the same from season to season. Anyone else experience this or should I too stay away from twikoff's crackpipe?

btw... with how much I play around with and run tests on the dvdtalk.com all stars.. I think I have gotten to the point where Im interested in a different perspective.. because I do think Im about ready to make that team good again, especially since they should be getting close to 9*..
so if any managers (that are able to keep a solid 9 stars ;) ) in here want to train the all stars for a couple (few) days, to give me a different perspective.. let me know..

I have no interest in dropping my main team and bringing the all stars into the league.. so I dont think this would be a conflict of interest.. if more then one person is interested.. I dont mind passing them around for a little while to get multiple points of view :D
of course.. I can still find time to train them.. but with my other scrub team.. and the main team.. and babysitting idgie's team..
a little break would be a good thing ;)

I could try for a few days... Though I'm not sure how much help I could offer.. since I am still not clear and quite in shock that my team has held their 9th * for just about 48 hours.

On another note.. I hope everyone doesn't mind, but I'm going to make my way down the list of DTSL teams and play each one, well.. those 8* and above ;)

I Will start later tonight, after training. If, for some reason, you'd rather my team not randomly challenge you, just send me a quick IM. I have trillian running and logged into all major chat programs.

Your initial loss is different than constant loss, at least for some players.

If he does indeed lose 4-5 every day, and drops 20 mph in 5 days then yeah... you need a new pitcher :)

I completelly agree with everything here. This is how both my pitchers are. They will quickly drop 4-5 MPH, but then hold there. If yours continue to drop, find new pitchers.

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be enough interest to keep at least 2-3 divisions going.

I'd say 50% of my fun comes from DTSL, 20% from Pro League, and 30% just from DT and statkeeping. :)

we have a really strong league here
and most of the members are much more interested in baseball then soccer or hockey..
american football might be the best chance to hurt this league.. but it sounds like american football is a LONG time away..

I think I've spent too much on this stupid game now to quit :)

I might try soccer when it comes out and it'd be sweet starting from the beginning in the DTSL soccer league. I absolutely don't have time for both, so i might do both a season and see which is more fun overall.

Bot as I said, I've already spent the dough on smallball (DT, letfies, QT's, 2 stadiums and a rookie) so I can't just leave.

Wait, you haven't used that ticket yet??? WTF is wrong with you?!! :)

For the DTSL history buffs, actually, dancinns started 2 days before me. We were discussing a trade in Fantasy Baseball and he told me about this cool game he came across on cnet.com called SmallBall. I briefly looked at it and gave him a courteous "yeah, that looks cool" response without any real intent to give it a serious look-see. But I got hooked very quickly and soon after, he posted here and DTSL was formed.

And look at us now. :)

It would actually be super-easy to copy for soccer and I'd really like to run it if dancinns didn't want to. That way I'd be more inclined to work on it too, automating more stuff :)

Yep.. it should be, hopefully.

I can't imagine there would be that much to change...
I can even offer help and/or hosting site, if blake can't host a new league.
I'm at the same web host as blake and not using that much space and they are quick and good about making subdomains...
though I still think the dtsl domain should be revisited, that is if Geoff allows the dvdtalk name to be used.

Just so you all know, I gave up on soccer a couple weeks ago. It was screwing up my baseball so I just let it go. My team is probably still 3*s, but it really didn't take long to get there. I hope that they have fixed those probs before the release. And anyways, if the complete release will be at thanksgiving, the beta tests will only run a little while. After that, it will cost. one of the guys at work has been trying to get me into php and mysql lately.. he has been telling me about all the tricks and such to making it work.. seems easy enough.. although I havent really had much time to play with it..

start at php.net and mysql.com and get the installer.. then decide if your going to use IIS or learn apache, if your doing it on your computer (or actually, if your using a provider that already has php installed, you can skip right past those steps)..
then for beginers, I would suggest trying a content manager.. you can find alot of them at sourceforge.net.. php nuke seems to be the most popular, although my friend keeps suggesting xoops (xoops.org)..
of course.. if your really going to dig in and learn it the hard way.. you can skip using the content manager.. but from my understanding, this is the easy way to get a jumpstart ;)

I heard it will cost just to play. But hopefully they'll design it so that when you buy a team, DT comes with it. None of this "DT costs extra crap."

And if it costs the same as those speciall 900 baseball teams, I probably won't do it.

my guess is that if they really are charging you to play.. then there probably isnt a DT and ST... i would assume that everyone that pays to play, gets a real trainer and noone has to deal with the crap trainer

It'll be 4-5 before the night's over.

If anyone wonders why I hate my team despite their strong overall performance, check out game #19269 against the GoodFeathers. You'd think an 8-1 lead in the 9th inning would be safe ... you'd be wrong.

It really is crazy how last week's SmallBall glitch (which the jackass commish has ignored btw) hasn't affected my team power one bit. Speed, catching, throwing, pitching ... all down a good 20%, but power went untouched. Thank God ... it makes it look like my team doesn't suck even though I know better.

Amazing comeback, but yep, your SS let one go right through his legs. Would have been an 8-5 victory for you had he fielded that ball. Then the 3rd baseman let one get past him. You would have won again had he made that play.

How about posting in the smallball forum? Keep bumping it up until the commish responds.

Three Day Delay

Ummmmmm.......

something really strange has happened here. Less than a week ago, I swept the premiership championship.....the next day I get creamed in the Champions Cup.....now I am 0-9, and just got beat 28-3. I haven't won a game this season.

I didn't get beaten that badly when I first started out!

Not that I know of. But I only know of three, 912, 913, & 914. Why, are they challenging you?

No, I know someone that wants to buy it or trade for it. Just checking here for them....:)

Ah, got it. But alas I cant help. I wish though that there was someway to communicate with other owners, like having their email listed on their team pages if they choose. Not everyone goes to the forums.

BTW did anyone get team 911? I know it was talked about what the owner would do with that team. Curious.

The commish said tonite that they won't be selling that team. Too controversial.

Cheers

Though I dunno if dancinns has the time to do a 2nd league.. someone else might have to set it up and run it.
That shouldn't be a problem. Most of the hard work in setting up a league is already done. All that needs to be done is tweaking the league to handling soccer. As for time to run it? We'll see. Running this one is really really tough ;) I'm sure that people would help out with that like Copenhagen and Blake are doing already....not to mention all the other little things that other people do to help out.

For the DTSL history buffs, actually, dancinns started 2 days before me. We were discussing a trade in Fantasy Baseball and he told me about this cool game he came across on cnet.com called SmallBall.
Actually, it was all thanks to Martin Sargent on TechTV's The Screensavers. So, everyone send an e-mail to martin@techtv.com and thank him for exposing me to this game so I could ruin your lives ;)

It would actually be super-easy to copy for soccer and I'd really like to run it if dancinns didn't want to. That way I'd be more inclined to work on it too, automating more stuff :)
If you want to run it that would be great. I'd still help out of course.

Here's a quote from Geoff in an e-mail from way back when I asked him about using the DVDTalk name.

"I don't have a problem with you associating it with DVD Talk, but make sure you indicate it's 'unofficial', I'd prefer you not register a ***dvdtalk.com domain as we do own the copyright for 'dvdtalk.com' and it would seem like it was 'official'."

I don't know how he'd feel about a dtsl domain though.

I too am trying to learn php. Seeing as my webhost runs it and allows it, it might be good to pick up.
You don't need no stinkin' book! I didn't but then again I have a background in programming (Java) so it was really easy for me to pick up PHP.

game #25727 watch the top of the 11th inning, I get guys on first and third no outs, Crusty lines a foul to third, it says out and my guy gets back and it says safe, then it says strike and Crusty gets to continue batting with one out and a 0 ball and 1 strike count. Ever seen that happen before?

Winning a 19-17 crapshoot would not be cause for gloating.

However, being 9-0 in Premiership would! :)

But I don't gloat because it always comes back to getcha, so I won't gloat. I was _extraordinarily_ lucky to win my games today...
