More Adult Swim coming!

Cartoon Network Expands Adult Swim Block

Cartoon Network executives today announced the expansion of the Adult Swim programming block to five nights a week beginning January 12. Currently scheduled from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. on Saturdays and 10 p.m.-1 a.m. on Sundays, Adult Swim will begin running next year Sunday through Thursday 11 p.m.-1 a.m., Megan Larson reports.

"The acquisition of Futurama and the ratings growth for our others series allows us to grow the schedule," said Jim Samples, executive vp and general manager for the network. Futurama will kick off the schedule Monday through Thursday 11-_11:30 p.m. followed by the critically praised animated comedy Home Movies which will run from 11:30 p.m. to midnight. The remaining hour will be filled action-oriented animation shows Inuyasha and Cowboy Bebop. On Sundays, Cartoon will program a mix of off-network shows like The Oblongs and home-grown originals from The Lab, Cartoon's animated studio based in Atlanta, such as AquaTeen Hunger Force.

The rationale for abandoning Saturday nights is that younger children stay up later on non-school nights. The networks wants to reserve Adult Swim for teenagers and twenty-somethings and will program kid-targeted fare on nights when younger audience don't have to go to bed early.

"At Cartoon Network we really want to animation to the level of general entertainment," said Samples. Most of the Adult Swim's current series have been renewed for an additional season but its expected that new shows will be added to the mix in second quarter 2003.

I'm hoping four nights a week wont be overkill, but I'm happy. I finally got around to watching Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law when they showed a marathon recently and its one of my favorite things on televison. Sealab is great too.
