Any cover that is under 150dpi is not really fit for quality printing. So please use you own discretion before printing out any cover!

Feel free to post cover requests and links to other covers in this thread.

I've been having some problems priting covers. I tape the paper on the end of the sheet, and tell the printer it's legal size, and it still cuts off the same amount. I have three copies of the same DVD cover with the tiny bit missing! I'm going to have to figure out what to do with them!

I print with PSP, and I rotate the image 90 degrees first.

A few months ago I printed off some covers, doing the same thing (at least I think so...) and they all printed off fine.

I'm thinking Sabastian, or someone else over seas because I belive that poster is Europian so a scan would be easy over there...

If someone can clean the scanner streaks I mentioned I was experiencing, I'd gladly scan them and mail them to whoever can clean and host them up.

If you can clean them, I'll just scan them and mail them your way.

As some of you here may know I had recently created a matching set of Halloween covers for the entire series....Since it's Halloween and I was bored I decided to tinker with a set just for the Michael Myers Halloween's.
I was wondering if you could give me your opinions on the work in progress.....Halloween 4 front custom DVD proto (http://www.customcoverart.com/newh4.GIF)

In an effort to help folks who are posting requests for long lists of snapper conversions I thought I'd show what can be done with the program 'Photoshop Elements'. This is a very nice program with many of the features of the full 'Photoshop' program but with a much smaller price tag. The newest version (2.0) can be purchased for around $80 (recommended for XP users) and the older versions (1.0, 1.1) can be found on ebay for as little as $20 to $30.

Here are a few snapper conversions I did with 'Elements'. They are not simply scan and refit. Each has some custom elements that will be apparent if you have the originals to compare.<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/clashofthetitans.jpg><center>============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/swarm.jpg><center>=============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/flashgordonsm.jpg><center>============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/ghoststory.jpg>

I can't begin to tell you how much fun this is. I've had this program for about 6 weeks and already I've converted about 65 snappers. Not content with simple scan and resize I always go for a little extra. For example you'll notice all the dumb slogans are removed from the 'Ghoststory' cover. Most also need to be centered for proper display on a keepcase. Recently I started removing the UPC seal (god are they ugly) whenever possible, as can be seen on 'Ghoststory and 'The Swarm'. Think I'll go back and remove them all!

Of course thats my point! You can make all kinds of changes while at the same time eliminating the dred snapper. You can do this yourself and it doesn't have to cost a small fortune.

Here's the latest snapper on working on! I can't make a choice as to which version to use as the final. One thing is for sure the original is bad news.<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/outbheads.jpg><center>Shrunken Heads!<center>============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/outbpic.jpg><center>The Monkey is the Star!<center>============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/outblank.psd.jpg><center>I think I,m leaning toward the blank (title only) version?

The fog blends alot better at higher res, so you don't see all those waves on the finished one...

Count me among those itching for the return of DVD Cover Art... :)

I've seen a few requests in this thread and previous versions of it of covers I either scanned myself or downloaded from dvdcoverart.com before it went down. I think someone requested Shawshank Redemption? I've got a First Strike (Jackie Chan) cover and insert that I sent to Matt shortly before the site closed. Others that I sent him at that time include US Marshals, Bait, Without Limits, and 2 Days in the Valley.

Since then, I've done a few others, including Digipack scans of Pulp Fiction CE and Jerry Maguire SE (single width spine for both).

Before DVD Cover Art went down, I had put in a request for a number of covers not listed on the site. Here is the list again, with a status explanation accompanying several of them, plus 2 new ones:

Anniversary Party
* Artificial Intelligence
* Bandits
Basket, The
* Brother
* Don't Say a Word
* Heist
Lantana
* Memento
Novocaine
* Nurse Betty
* Pi
* Shipping News, The
Up at the Villa

The ones marked with an asterisk (*) I was able to find low resolution scans at cdcovers.cc. I didn't expect much of them, but I was actually able to turn most of them into halfway decent covers by doing a lot of resolution conversion and resizing. The text is pretty blurry on the back, but except for a couple of them, they look pretty much like any other case on the shelf if you look at them from more than about 2 feet away... If anyone has a high res copy of any of those, I'd certainly rather the upgrade. If anyone is in need of something, I can send the converted low res version.

One thing I've started doing differently is making single width cover art 3200 pixels wide instead of the recommended 3240. I found the latter is too wide for any cases I've seen. The only reason I didn't notice it initially is that my printer was cutting off the far right edge of the cover and keeping it close to the right size, but I was having a heck of a time getting the spine centered on the case... I saw another site recommed 3215 wide, which would probably fit, but 3200 doesn't leave much width to spare. Anyone else notice this?

I think it was in Part IX of this thread that someone listed a nice Jurassic Park Trilogy custom cover. While I don't think I'll be going to a combined case for them, I did download it and tweak the text in the top red bar on the front cover to use the Jurassic Park font. If anyone's interested, I've got that variation of the cover and the free font (could easily email the font to anyone who wants it).

I think that's all for now. :)

Dan

p.s. johnf14, have you considered trying a combination of versions 1 and 2 for the Outbreak cover, having the human faces along side the monkey face with a transitional fade in between?

Cosmic Bus
10-13-02, 10:24 AM
I'm in the process of doing a custom for Hollow Man, using the original poster art (the very simple "ghost"-ly image of Caine's face), but the new cover and spine don't match up well at all with the bright blue back of the standard cover. I considered just making it black & white, save for the studio logos, screen caps, and whatnot, but it still looks too busy when places along side the new cover. I'll probably end up making an entirely new back, but that's something I've never attempted before, so this might take a little while... :)

Actually, does anyone know if the thin, tall font:

that's used for the credit listings on DVD sleeves is available for download someplace? I can see it coming in handy.

Great work Greek. I could use the first cover, let me know when you have available

JohnF14, do you have that 3rd Outbreak cover available to download anywhere??

Cosmic, you might take a look at sebastian's Idle Hands cover for ideas about a Hollow Man. He had to create a complete custom back & spine. It's available on his website under the "My Stuff" section www.myprivateparts.com also I think a black & white "shaded" look (like the poster is) with red lettering for Hollow Man would be good

Cosmic Bus
10-13-02, 02:21 PM
Thanks for the tip, JJE. I just downloaded the Idle Hands cover now for some pointers. If anything, it has a bunch of the logos I need to make my custom look 'official'. :)

I finished up a rough version of Hollow Man a little while ago, but I'm not happy with the back. The section with the credits just looks sloppy (it's just an negetive image of the original, with some color editing), so I'll be scrapping it to start over.

Also, I still haven't solved my printer problem (see first page)... and I've developed another one where the little "movable catching fork things" seem to jam and make a racket. It's an JP Deskjet 842c... and it's still under warranty for another month, they'll replace it no questions asked... but I don't like to waste things, so if anyone has had this problem and fixed it, just let me know.

JJE-187

Bus, the front & spine look great. I agree about the back, any chance you can put the columbia "Special Edition" logo on the front? maybe make it red with black lettering.

Cosmic Bus
10-13-02, 07:49 PM
Well, I spent this evening working on a new back for my Hollow Man cover, and this is the end result:

http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/hotarubi/hollow_man_pre.jpg

I used a cropped image of Caine crawling with the crowbar (the same pic that's on the right-hand side) with a ton of Gaussian blur; I also added some rather neat (IMO :)) glow on the text. As usual, if anyone wants the full version, feel free to e-mail me.

And per request, a Special Edition version:

http://img.ranchoweb.com/images/hotarubi/hollow_man_pre2.jpg

The Greek: That seems awfully large. Are they in JPG or TIFF format? A JPG cover at 300 dpi and 10.80 x 7.25 isn't typically over 2mb or so.

The_Greek
10-13-02, 07:57 PM
They are Jpegs at the highest quality level in Photoshop (12). I have to reduce the jpeg quality setting to an 8 to get them to come out around two megs?

JJE-187
10-13-02, 08:45 PM
I don't have the capability of creating covers (I just admire the hard work everyone does) but I noticed something while looking at Greek's superbit ver. 1 cover. Alot of people (including myself) have wanted slim covers for the Fox 5 Star collection. Couldn't someone use a silver or grey (or another color, maybe black or navy blue w/gold or yellow lettering) backdrop and just create a Fox 5 Star template? It might be to difficult, but i've seen people do amazing things with photoshop in these threads

Greek and Cosmic Bus, Excellent work! :thumbsup:

Darthvong, your latest Halloween III cover looks great, but would it be possible for you to put together another cover identical to the original poster? The title was a shiny chrome color above the trick-or-treaters. It is one of my favorite posters from the series.

Darthvong, your latest Halloween III cover looks great, but would it be possible for you to put together another cover identical to the original poster? The title was a shiny chrome color above the trick-or-treaters. It is one of my favorite posters from the series.

Actually I could do that very easily....Do you want the original back cover from the goodtimes DVD? If not I'll make one up from scratch.....

I've been thinking about attempting that, making a five star slim template....I have a few ideas how to do, but right now I'm swamped with custom work for people so it'll be awhile before I can get my hands dirty....

Did you get the Grumpy Old Men snapper scan from my link I posted yet?

That seems awfully large. Are they in JPG or TIFF format? A JPG cover at 300 dpi and 10.80 x 7.25 isn't typically over 2mb or so.
All the 300 dpi covers I've seen and done are around 4-5 meg, with inserts typically being in the 2 meg neighborhood. Is that what you meant, perhaps? At any rate, 8 meg is quite big for a cover.

You guys are really going to thank me for this post. Everyone is always out looking for 8.5x14" Glossy Paper, and complaining about the cost. Well you are in luck. I have stumbled upon a promotion with HP, offering a FREE ROLL OF GLOSSY PAPER. The roll is 36" by 15' (36 inches by 15 feet). With this free roll, you can cut your own 8.5x14" slices for a nice, glossy finish to your DVD covers. You could probably get around 60 Covers with this roll. Be sure to fill out the form, as I don't know how much longer this offer is going on for.

EDIT: I forgot to mention this is only available to U.S. Residents. Sorry Canada! :(

Well, since I have been seeing so many request lists being posted, I'll just add mine to the choir! All of these are covers only, no inserts required.

2001 (Classic Collection Limited Edition DVD/CD soundtrack set, looking for double Amaray sized)
The Abyss: Special Edition (double Amaray sized)
Armageddon (Criterion edition, double Amaray sized)
The Art of War
Babylon 5 "In The Beginning/The Gathering"
Basic Instinct (regular or special edition)
Battlefield Earth

Pump up the Volume
Purple Rain
The Right Stuff
Space Jam

Superman III
Superman IV
Tron (20th Anniverary Edition, double Amaray sized)
Universal Soldier
Young Guns II
Hail Columbia (IMAX)
The Dream Is Still Alive (IMAX)
Blue Planet (IMAX)
Destiny In Space (IMAX)
Mission To Mir (IMAX)
Depeche Mode: The Videos 86-98
Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris (double Amaray sized)
World's Greatest Rollercoaster Thrills
America's Greatest Rollercoaster Thrills 2
Madonna Music (DVD single)
South Park, Volume 1
Video Essentials
Ultimate DVD Platinum (double Amaray sized)
Hollywood Studios DVD Sampler, Volume 1
Dolby Digital Demo Disc

The ones that I have noted with "double Amaray sized" are the double Amaray cases that are the same thickness as a single DVD case ("flippy" as I like to call them).

If you know where I can get any of these covers, just email or PM me with the locations or the actual hi-res graphics.

Thanks Psychlowne for the tip on the HP glossy paper, ordered my roll as soon as I read it. Will definitely need it if I can get a hold of these covers!

I did some experimentation with the Neato DVD inserts today, the matte works out good considering that it costs half as much as the glossy that they sell. The problem is you have to use the MediaFace software that Neato sells to get it to print out right, since the paper is specifically sized and perforated. I think that regular glossy paper is probably the way to go.

Regarding Fox 5-Star covers, why not just crop and resize (squeeze) the spine? Eye-balling my Die Hard and Speed cases, it looks like the facial box is only about an eighth of an inch wider than a single keepcase spine. You should be able to easily squeeze it that much horizontally without it being readibly noticeable.

The main problem with the 5-Star is you can't scan them. Well I take that back you can scan them, they just don't look very good. Seeing as how there's so many requests for these, I'll start on a template this week and see how it goes.

If you're willing to, if you slice the 5 Star Covers with a blade, they fit nicely, and the spine matches up too. It might run slightly over.

I thought I'd put out this ***FLAG*** for anyone looking for 'Amaray' single cases. For some time now , InetDVD, USplastics, etc. hae been shipping the old style 'Amaray' case. The one without the cutout on the openning edge.

I just purchased 2 cases of 30 from a seller on eBay for $12 each (case) with free shipping. These are the new style 'Amaray' (the ones we all love). Evidently they are from a chain rental store. Each case has a cover insert and inner insert for the Britney Spears movie 'Crossroads' but the cases are in perfect condition with nice tight clear plastic overlays. Thats $12 for 30 cases, not bad at all (the best price I've ever found). I just ordered 4 more cases.

Looks like he has about a dozen more (cases of 30) listed .

Chris,

I've got over 700 titles in my collection right now. I have this thing for uniformity so I started using the Amaray cases on every single disc I own.

If I receive a new disc that has a keepcase cover that was wrinkled by those rotten security stickers it's replaced. All Alpha, spider or any of the other (now legion) type keepcases are also switched over to 'Amaray'.

I buy more discs than I keep so I use the Alpha and other oddball namebrand keepcases for the titles I sell on eBay (the ones I couldn't resist buying but have since decided I will not watch again).

Now, of course, there are about 150 snappers I'm in the process of converting and each of those will require a nice new Amaray. As you can see these $12 cases were a very nice find. Especially since the newer Amaray cases are in short supply.

There are two styles of Amaray cases. The newer version is called the 'DVD-Safe' (by Amaray) and is the one your probably most familiar with. It has an indentation on the outside edge. You know that area where you can get your finger tips in to open the case. The older Amaray doesn't have the indentation and the actual tray area that holds the disc is also different. Both styles have the same two pronged locking system. The older version case is no longer in production but there must still be some distributors out there with a lot because this is the type InetDVD & USplastics are now shipping.

They're both good cases but I think the newer Amaray is better (IMO). I haven't been able to buy the new style in months now so this eBay find was a welcome one.

Here's a couple new conversions. The first 'This Island Earth' is a snapper conversion with a bunch of junk logos removed from the nice original poster art (with as little alteration as possible), UPC seal removed and the spine rearranged. The second "Daughter of Dr. Jeykll' is a redesign of the very ugly (IMO) original. The original poster art is resized and centered with some ugly logo's removed. The spine layout and blue surround area are my addition.<center>============<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/thislandearth.jpg><center>===========<center><img src=http://home.earthlink.net/~jkelley11/johnf14/drjsdaughter.jpg>

Yes, that's what I created the forum on my site for was a resource for people to request or share their cover art. I can't host too many because of the old bandwidth issue but forum members on my site are more than welcome to share their stuff with each other.
I have spoke to Matt regarding this and he's all for it. I told him that I'm not trying to replace DVDCoverArt, just supplement it.
And as long as I can manage it my site will be permanent.
I'm trying to implement someway to minimize or limit bandwidth usage of downloads. If I can do that then I will take submissions for posting like Matt did. I don't want to end up shutting down because of heavy usuage like DVDCoverart did.
I do have some covers other than mine on the site. Also if its a case of the artist has the storage and bandwidth, but doesnt have a site. I'm more than happy to post a pic with a link to the actual file for downloading.
I want to make my site a good suplement to DVDCoverArt once it has returned.
So please feel free to join my forum and post as much as you like there....
Thanks,
Chris

Batman would be cool, too bad the last couple sucked....

I thought covers for those would be cool with just the logos.
The black and gold embossed Bat-emblem for the first one.
The snow-covered one for Batman Returns
The Bat-emblem in purple and green with the question mark for the third
And the bat/robin emblem for the last one...

If you can pull that off, those would be awesome!

Yes thats correct. The 4&5 have a 38mm spine and the 6&7 have a 51mm spine.

By the way were you able to download the 'OUTBREAK' cover?

Look at it this way, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, and you still have priorities (rent, food, car payment) and you DVD addiction doesn't get in the way of that then I say so be it...

You can get a full res version (~2.4 megs) from

My FortuneCity Page (http://members.fortunecity.com/daathens)

You'll need to go to the page to get it, I don't thing fortunecity allows direct linking.

I've also uploaded the Regular and Superbit (2) versions of the Fifth Element cover there as well (There is still some cleanup I need to do on them, so they probably will be updated). I got them to around 5.4 megs now. I also saw another pretty cool Fifth Element Image (http://upx.primenova.com/mpp_main/Fifth_Element.jpg) . Anyone think that would be good for use on a cover.

Jason, outstanding work on the Friday covers -- I will definetly have to replace all of mine now. I can't wait to see the alternate cover for Part 8 (I'm assuming it's the "I Love NY" one). Kudos on those and the Elm Streets.

Thanks for sending me the the cover Greek, BTW, I printed it off and it looked just fine. A shame that the poster was a bit truncated (I didn't realise until AFTER I posted it...) but it still looks excellent all printed off :)

Hi there. I've been looking for a Superbit Fifth Element cover, but the one called "FifthElementSuperbit_2a.jpg" looks just like the reguar one. Do you have another Superbit cover?

Thanks in advance.

The rear cover and spine are identical to the main cover. It is using an alternate poster for the front cover though. There is another version of the superbit cover as well, check page two for more details.

Thanks! The other Suerbit cover is just what I wanted! Any chance you can upload it to your web page?

I'm still looking for a custom 2-disc cover (Amaray or Alpha) for Apocalypse Now and Apocalypse Now Redux. Anybody have one or interested in undertaking the project?

anyone done Scooby-Doo or Insomnia. Widescreen of course (also I know most people hate them but could you leave the "Widescreen Edition" on the front, I like to promote my widescreen disc.)

I'll do Scooby and Insomnia as soon as I get them. I should get Scooby today from Columbia House, and can probably get it converted tonight.

I read the DVD cover thread and about printing out my own dvd covers. I have one setup in Photoshop 7 that I want to print. When I try to print it says the image is larger than the printable area and some clipping will occur. How can I get around this with standard 8½x11 paper? And will it actually clip the image a lot? Just wondering how some people print them from their PCs with standard letter size paper. Thanks.

Oh and I didn't put this in the DVD cover thread because I didn't think I'd get many responses.

A standard dvd cover should fit the printable area just fine. You might want to check File>Page Setup, it may be set as portrait rather than landscape, in which case it will chop off the sides.

Well I rotated the canvas so I could print the normal way. Maybe I can try and switch it back and change it to landscape. Any other ideas?

Do you have Illustrator? I normally don't print from Photoshop and use Illustrator instead because you can precisely see (and change) the orientation of the image against the printable area size.

The easiest way to print covers on standard paper is to set your printing mode to landscade mode, then tape two sheets of paper together and tell the program that it's legal-sized paper and not letter.

Thanks everyone. I switched it to landscape and legal size paper with another piece taped to it and it worked like a charm. I also switch the print orientation from center to 0 top and 0 left.

Thanks again.

Can someone please help me to find a cover for Muppets Take Manhattan. I recently got the free version from a Cheerios box and need a nice cover for an Amaray case.

While I'm still on my Besson kick...

http://daojia.free.fr/cinema/films/subway.jpg

This is the DVD cover we have here... it sucks!

http://www.tiscali.se/flimmer/images/movie/1438_subway_150.gif This is much better... or even this http://www.yolanthe.de/covers/subway.jpg

Anyone have any larger images of either of those posters? I'd actually like both for other uses too...

If you have the Canon S-Series printers, just plain lie to it and tell the print dialog you have legal paper in it, set the left margin to zero and it will print on letter paper all the way to then end. Single width cover fits perfectly.
