Sopranos:prequel series a possiblity?

I recently acquired used copies of the first two seasons on DVD and have become very addicted. However, seems I recall hearing somewhere that James Gandolfini plans on leaving the show after this year. If so, I hope they end the series in its current run at that point as he makes the show IMO.
I was wondering, and forgive me if it has already been mentioned, if a possibility exists of a series revolving around the early years of Tony Soprano when he was about the age of Christopher? I would love to have seen the rise of the structure and what it was like when Uncle Jack was in charge. Not to mention younger versions of Sylvio, Big P*ssy, and how Tony and Carmella fell in love.

i don't want this. I'm a HUGE fan, but this cast is PERFECT. Anything else would be seen as a bunch of scabs and ruin the image of the show.

I don't think Gandolfini is leaving but David Chase the man who created the show is only doing one more season after this. I don't think anyone has a choice to stick around after since it is DC's show.

I thought they were going to do one more season and ending it with a Sopranos Movie.

As long as Jar Jar isn't in it, I'd like to see it.

Chase and all the actors are signed for the fifth season. They may even be filming the fifth season almost immediately after finishing the fourth season, a la BTTF II and III. All this talk went on during the summer of 2001, when HBO made the big announcement about re-signing everyone.

Chase has said that he's leaving after S5, and the actors have publicly said they have no interest in continuing without Chase. It was also talked about that Gandolfini was flat out not interested in continuing, so it would take an armored car to keep him involved with the series, even if Chase decides to continue.....

I'm 99.99% sure they are not... after all, they have to wait till Springsteen's concert tour is over, don't they?

That would be interesting. Prequels can be tough though - continuity.

A prequel would be a little rough since the children are much older now. Unless the prequel was set when Tony Sopranos was just getting started, say, in his teens or early 20s, then you could have pretty much a whole new cast.

That's what I had in mind. A story with them in their younger days with a new cast.

Standard prequel problem: no tension.

Will Tony, Silvio, Paulie, Big ***** get killed? Um, no.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Uncle Junior and Tony's Dad. Like in those flashbacks Tony had of them.

That would be a big problem.

Having a younger cast would just feel wrong. The sopranos works on so many levels simply because the actors fall perfectly into place.

I really like this idea. I love the cut scenes of the old times. Id love to see Tony, Paulie, *****, Sil, as a young gang along the lines of Jackie Jr and Christopher. I've wondered how Tony got into it. It would be like a younger Goodfellas, the first part of the movie at least. Probably never happen, but it would be neat to see a series or at least an HBO original mini-series or movie of it

There was an article in the Ny Times yesterday that said they may now do 6 seasons because of the ratings. It said they were all signed to do six seasons. Heres the link below if thats ok

Will Chase stay involved? I heard he was leaving after season five regardless.

That's what was reported during that loooong hiatus in the summer of 2001.

And I'm pretty sure that Gandolfini was only signed thru five, so I don't know where this season six talk is coming from, unless it's completely new (or it's somehow tied to Chase coming back).

The money that HBO would throw at Chase for another season is gonna make what Seinfeld was offered for one-more-season look like chump change.....

(linked about 4 posts above yours)

Officially, the show is to conclude at the end of next season, its fifth. But that plan may be changing. Executives are seriously discussing extending the show to a sixth season, though they acknowledge that it will entirely depend on the decision of the show's creator, David Chase. The show's cast, including its star, James Gandolfini, is already under contract for six seasons, if the producers decide to extend the show's run.

Another possibility, already discussed by Mr. Chase and HBO, is to bring the characters to the big screen in a post-series theatrical movie. That is under active consideration, people involved in the show said.
