I just played Soul Calibur 2...
So I may be out of the loop here, but I finally got to play the arcade version of Soul Calibur 2, and WOW...
It's just so smooth. The frame rate is solid, the motion is fluid, the controls tight...I just can't say enough about it. Now if only the arcade I was at didn't have a crummy monitor for it...
So did anyone else get to play this yet?
I'm salivating for the XBOX release...

hee hee, owned someone 12 wins in a row before I had to get to class. the new characters are decent. I used Ralph a bit, he seemed to be a poker, but nice style. Nightmare's other outfit is pretty mich Siegfied

Anyway, I can't wait for this. I'll probably get the GC version if Link ends up being in the GC version as reported a few months back. I got used to playing the original with the analog stick, so the small, crappy d-pad on the GC controller won't be a detriment.

I've heard of Soul Caliber and always wondered what type of game it was. I don't think it's one of the most well known arcade fighters of all time. I'd say Street Fighter series and Mortal Kombat series top the lists followed by Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and even Marvel vs. Capcom. Then maybe Soul Caliber would be somewhere in there below Killer Instinct. That's a total guess on my part and I only base it on my personal impressions and cruising the web just now looking for revenue data (which I couldn't find, but I did find other supportive pages). I could be completely wrong and Soul Caliber could be the most popular fighter ever. I just don't see how it could be more popular than MK or Street Fighter.

Soul Caliber on the Dreamcast was a masterpiece. It was just as good if not better than the competition. As far as 3D fighters go its stands up to Tekken or Virtua Fighter. I'm looking forward to this one.
Soul Caliber was a Dreamcast launch title, but by the end of the Dreamcast no game ever topped it. One of the best looking and playing games ever.

I second that, Killer Instinct wasnt thaaaaat great. I liked the KI, part 2 was a step in the wrong direction and KI Gold..well....yeah you get the idea. HOWEVER I'd like to see it get revistied on a next gen system.

I didn't say Soul Calibur was the most popular fighting game ever. It never had quite the mass market appeal of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, or Tekken. I said that many (meaning mostly reviewers and hard core fighting fans) considered it to be the best 3-D fighting game of all time.
Virtua Fighter 4 has taken over the top spot in many gamers lists of best 3D fighters though, but Soul Calibur is still the best for those that want a game that's easier to pick up and play, while still having a ton of depth.

I was looking for this at a few arcades this weekend, no luck
Trigger - Soul Calibur is the best fighter I've played on any system. Wonderful graphics and deep gameplay.

Soul Calibur for Dreamcast was awesome. I can't wait for the Soul Calibur 2 to hit consoles.
Here's my ranking of the top 3 3-D(or quasi 3-D) fighting games ever.
1. Virtua Fighter 4 (PS2)
2. Soul Calibur (Dreamcast)
3. Dead or Alive 3 (X Box)

I have a MAME upright cabinet with Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat 2, and pretty much all the Capcom fighters made before 2001 but the game that gets the most play is Soul Calibur (I also have a Dreamast hooked up to it).
Soul Calibur is miles beyond Killer Instinct IMHO. But they really shouldn't be compared at all since KI is a 2D fighter.

Soul Caliber is definitely the best 3D fighting game. It's just so easy to sidestep in that game. I consider Tekken the best of all the fighting games, it's still a mostly 2D game. I would rarely see anyone sidestep in the game.
Killer Instinct was a great game when it came out. The graphics on it were gorgeous and it also started the combo trend that continued in MK3. Unfortunately, KI 2's graphic were pretty bad. It looked cartoony and didn't even look better than SF2. It's on par with the way Street Fighter games look like, and admittedly, I hate the look.
I haven't taken a look at the SC 2 yet but the web site shows that the arcade I used to go to has it so I'll have to stop by and give it a try.

I think I spent more money on Killer Instinct than any other arcade game ever. I even played that piece of crap SNES conversion that was soooooooo slow...
Anyways, back on topic, Soul Calibur and even Soul Blade/Edge were two of the best all around fighting games ever made. The graphics were unreal, the fighting balanced and smooth, and the action fast and deep. (why does this sound like porn? LOL)
I am a fan of fighting games in general, but it's Soul Calibur and Street Fighter Alpha 3 that I come back to time and again. They are simply magnificent. I still remember picking up my dreamcast on 9-9-99 at 1204 am from eb and going home to play soul calibur for the next 6 hours, and screwing off class and work the next day to keep on playing. what a game...
