What is the concensus on GTA3 pricing after Vice City is out?
Yes, I tried doing searches, but I'd say half the threads around here include "GTA3" somewhere in it! If someone has a thread discussing this, please post a link.
I am THIS close to picking up a PS2, and am wondering if the thinking is that GTA3 will be reduced in price (or perhaps bundled with Vice City for a deal?) after Vice City is released. I would probably pay (close to) full retail for Vice City, since clearly IT will not go down in price for MANY MANY MONTHS.
But any thoughts on the price point of GTA3 in the next 1-6 months?
Note: If I saw one at BBV for $34.99 buy-two-get-one I'd probably pick it up now with a couple other titles. I'm not much interested in trying to save $5 after shipping by going the Fleabay route. If GTA3 might go down after Xmas, I could probably keep busy with Vice City and Kingdom Hearts purchased at ~ retail.

Wait until Vice City comes out. Sony's Greatest Hits line is $19.99, and includes any game that has sold 400,000 copies and been out at least 9 months. GTA3 came out Nov. 2001, and has sold over 7 million copies. Once Vice City comes out, I feel certain GTA3 will go Greatest Hits. You can hold out a month or so.

Electronics Boutique is currently running a promotion for preorders of Vice City, where they are essentially giving people $35 in credit for GTA3.
Now, EB is a huge chain, and I'm sure is in the know with the big 3. If Sony was planning on dropping the price of GTA3 any time soon, would EB be running this promotion? It's not like Vice City is a hard sell, they're doing this because they know they can still make money off GTA3.
That is of course conjecture, but if EB had much reason to think GTA3 was going to be in the Greatest Hits line any time soon, there's no way they would be doing this.

Is that offer only mentioned inside the store? I've looked on the webste and see no mention of the offer at all. Doesn't matter much since the nearest one is an hour or so away.

For those who havent pre-ordered...
I think once people load up GTA:Vice and realize its not GTA 4 youll be able to pick up lots of used copies of GTA 3, seeing as how lots of people are trading it in for Vide City. It seems the people who come into my store ask "When's GTA 4 coming out?" I tell them "You mean Vice City?" and I explain that it isnt part "4" they lose immediate interest. Bad salesmanship? or simply imforming? You be the judge

It's a proper sequel, I don't see why it should matter if there's a number on it or not.

It's really Rockstar's own fault if they lose sales cause folks don't see it as a proper GTA4. Their "it's not a sequel or a prequel, it's another slice of the GTA universe" stance is all the more reason why folks are confused.
Is it really a new unique game that those who had GTA3 would buy or is it more like when Lucasarts re-released the enhanced Star Wars X-wing and Tie Fighter games...
What they want people to think, and what people are thinking could be two different things.

Based on this market analysis, they're going to TRY to keep GTA3 at $50. Personally, I'd have to agree that this is unlikely, if not impossible.

"Due to slowing sales of GTA3 on the PS-2, we believe that it will be difficult to maintain a premium price point for both GTA3 and Vice City simultaneously.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the follow-up to GTA3, is scheduled for release on October 29 on the PS-2. On its 3Q02 earnings call, Take-Two stated its intention to price both GTA3 and Vice City at a $50 retail price point after Vice City is released. To our knowledge there has never been an instance when an original and follow-up titles have both been able to sustain premium price
points. Despite the massive success of GTA3, we do not believe that it can sustain a $50 price point when a 'new and improved' version of the game is also available in Vice City.
As August 2002 sales demonstrate, demand for GTA3 may be waning ahead of the release of Vice City. Furthermore, we believe that many gamers will trade in their used versions of GTA3 when Vice City is released. As a result of the anticipated increase of available used titles on the market, we believe that it will be difficult to sell new versions of GTA3 at a premium price point. We also expect that unit sales of new versions of GTA3 may be negatively impacted due to trade-ins."
