PS2 consoles still breaking?
I'm considering buying a PS2 but I remember (from quite a while ago) that a lot of people were having problems with the disc drive breaking. Has that problem been mostly solved? Or do a lot of people still have the drive die after a few months? Thanks in advance!

I have had my PS2 for a year and a half. I have had no problems with it what-so-ever and it is used pretty much every day. I haven't heard of any problems from my friends who picked them up when they dropped to $199. The only problems I have actually heard about, where on this board many months ago, which have since been fixed by Sony for free.

I believe they pretty much corrected that problem. I mean there's always going to be a certain percentage of every piece of electronic equipment made that malfunctions throughout it's life span, so you're always taking a small risk.
But I don't think the problems are anywhere near as common as they were in 2000-2001 around launch, if that's what you're worried about.

I've got launch day PS2 as well. And despite what the sites have been saying about the position, I've had mine vertical since the beginning and have never had a problem. Just treat it with love and care

I've had my PS2 since launch day as well. No problems whatsoever. It's even outlasted my Sony dvd player, in spite of the fact that it gets about 100 times more use.
It seems that these things are built to last. I keep mine horizontally.
