I have just been given permission by my wife to purchase a big screen. I have to buy quick before she changes her mind. We agreed that I could spend up the $4000. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

One word--PIONEER. Non-Elite 53" or 64" fits your budget. SD643HD is fantastic. Lots of reviews at various sites. I studied the buy for many months before making the decision. Love mine. Good Luck!!!

There's a 57" Sony WS HDTV ready for $2800 and a 57" Toshiba WS HDTV ready fro $2400. I am trying to decide between the two, which one is better. I am leaning towards the Sony because I think they make better TV's.

Stay away from Sony's 51" and 57" HW40 models which were made back in April........for more information you can check out the hometheaterspot forum. There are many who experienced a "flicker" problem which caused the owners to either have them fixed or replaced. Some of the replacements suffered from the same problem. I am really disappointed with Sony on this problem due to the fact that they have not made this known to it's consumers on their website. They have known about the problem for quite some time now and still have failed to release information regarding these models(specifically the models which were built in April of this year)
Anyone buying a Sony......go with the newer models out. I forget the exact number but it is a 500 series model number. These have something called a DVI interface which is going to be needed for something in the future. Once again...go to hometheaterspot and many questions can be answered there under the Sony topic. :)

I find it amazing that people can recommend sets without knowing what material they will be used for and what size constraints exist.

seriously Milo, what do you want to use your tv for? do you mostly watch TV or DVDs? what is the source of your television programming (over the air, cable, satellite?) do you play video games? do you want to use your set as a computer monitor too? what size set were you thinking about? will it fit in the room you want to put it in? were you leaning towards 16X9 or 4X3 aspect ratio? do you require the best possible picture right out of the box or are you willing to tweak the set yourself? would you consider having the set calibrated by an isf technician? do you have little kids who might touch or scratch the screen?
as you can see there really are a lot of things you need to think about before you or anyone else can make an informed decision. this is a big decision. no set is perfect for every use. that's why it's important to figure out what is most important to you and go with the model/brand that does those things best.

I mostly will use the TV for DVD's and Satellite Programing. I won't use it for much more. I was planning on getting an HD Directv reciever and dish and a new progressive scan DVD player.
I was looking for a 16X9 tv between 55 and 65 inches. I do not know the benifits of having a set calibrated by an isf technician.
I have a baby on the way who will be touching the set in a couple of years.
Sorry I havn't given better quidelines to what my preferences are, but I had to leave town shortly after I started this thread and I just got back home. Anyway, the other comments have been very helpful even without me providing guidelines.
