American Idol 8/27: NO THEME!!!!! but...

They get to pick a song and the judges get to pick one too. This comes from the following Entertainment Tonight article:

'Idol' Spoilers: Sneak a Peek at Tonight's Show!
August 27, 2002

Will JUSTIN recover from last week's MICHAEL JACKSON blunder? Will hoarse KELLY regain her rafter-shaking voice? Will underdog NIKKI go all the way?

ET's special correspondent, judge PAULA ABDUL visited the ET set and gave us a heads up on tonight's episode of "American Idol." According to Paula, the talented trio will sing songs specifically selected for each of them by the judges, in addition to a song of their own choice.

"I know for Justin, we tossed in a TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY song, 'Sign Your Name,' " Paula said. "ELTON JOHN's 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' and a STEVIE WONDER song -- I'm not sure which one. For Nikki, we did something that would be very suitable for her, like ALANNAH MYLES' 'Black Velvet.'"

Wednesday night's show has been expanded from 30 minutes to an hour and will reportedly include a review of each of the three finalists' "Idol" experiences. Highlights of Kelly, Justin and Nikki's auditions and performances will be revisited. After reviewing the ups and downs of each of their performances, the judges will provide their commentary, criticism and congratulations to the trio.
YES!!! The mentioned Terrence Trent D'Arby!!!!!!

Off Topic: Do you think that in order to recoup their money from bad sales of their CDs, the studio will put the furniture from the waiting room on eBay?

.... I really like that red couch! It would look good in my TV room!

BTW, 20 mins until showtime!

Sounded Karaoke to me. She did a good job, but not great. Strangely, Paula said something that made sense ... Nikki's "sound" is close enough to Nicks' that it almost sounded like an impersonation.

Yep the "judges" made a fair call on Nikki's performace. It was just okay which is not what you want in a final three competition.

As much as I dislike Justin, he did a good job on this song. Phenominal is being way too generous but I agree on the Simon's no dancing comment

Wow Dvdtalk is loading slow as heck for me and my ping test is off the scale.

Anyway hated Kelly's song selection and didn't think she sang it particularly well.

When this thing first started, I immediately associated Nikki with "Black Velvet" - I don't know how much I liked it though now that I've heard it.

I'll go out on a limb and say I enjoyed Nikki's rendition of Black Velvet; though the song's never been on my top 10,000 favs.

Whoever selected Justin's song must want him to lose.

An absolutely horrible rendition.

Kelly still sounded a bit "off" but still pretty darn good. She's still hoarse when she talks and goes "woo hoo." Not very classy though to say that she's tired of the competition and wants to get on with her career.

I think I finally understand what Simon means by Kareoke. Nikki sounded great, but if I closed my eyes, I would see Stevie Nicks, not her.

Kelly was off and more than by a bit. She tried to do too much with the song and didn't pull it off in my book.

Should have gone with TERENCE instead of ELTON... hmmm, who picked that song... didn't Paula point to the Brit? (I like George Michael's version better...)

Put here's my breakdown of their performances (smiley style!):

Nikki's first song:
Nikki's second song:

Justin's first song:
Justin's second song:

Kelly's first song:
Kelly's second song:

But in the end, there can be only two... Nikki =

I thought the exact same thing. I mean, hello? If singing two songs a week wears you out, how would you ever manage touring and doing a whole set every single night?

I thought Nikki had mega-balls to say she sounded like Stevie Nicks. That sounded arrogant.

I thought the judges choice for Nikki was much better (even thought I don't like Black Velvet.) I thought on the first song she was too flat, and didn't sound like she was "singing" through most of it. Just sort of saying the words without much inflection. The second song was much better.

Justin was awesome on song 1. He pulled out that falsetto. It was a very good choice. The judge's choice sucked however. Maybe it's because I hate that song, but I don't know what crack the judges were smoking when they picked that. I'd love to hear Justin do so many other things: Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Jeff Buckley, or the aforementioned TT D'Arby. But Elton John? I agree, it's as if they want him to lose. Sucky song aside, I think Justin did an okay job with it.

Kelly's first song was boring as was her second song. If the judges picked a ballad for her, why did she pick another ballad? She didn't get to use her soulfulness-- she just seemed like a generic VH1 diva. She hit the notes but there wasn't much passion there. I would have liked her to do something like the Eurythmics "Would I Lie to You?"

Okay...Sox game is over...let's get this party started...

Oh...oh well...

You know it was very weird that they showed the Sox game because AI is dependent on the voting. So that means people in Boston are going to vote (if they are voting) on their favorite and not on performance...uh...not that it really matters I guess.
