Question for Buffy and Charmed watchers

So, I know the show Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, have seen dozens of episodes.

But other than the pilot for Charmed I have never seen an episode until this past night.

I was shocked at what a blatant Buffy rip-off it was. Vampires and martial arts choreography?

Now, I'm asking those of you who know the show... is this how it always is? Or was this episode just some "send up" of Buffy? Or did the show's producers cave to paranoia and change the show to be a Buffy clone?

Anyone?

I think over the last couple of seasons, Charmed has become more and more like Buffy and is not as successful. I think they are trying to be more hip and more action oriented like Buffy.

That's it.
It may have started earlier, but it was very noticable in Shannon's last season. Oddly enough, isn't that when Buffy jumped to UPN?

Interesting point.

The only part of Charmed's continuing saga that really felt ripped from Buffy, IMO, is the whole Phoebe/Cole nonPlot of suck--sort of a paler, less emotional copy of the Buffy/Angel romance. The rest of the show is more or less a mediocre/fun entry in the same general 'girls kicking butt' genre as Buffy.

The vampires were a one-off thing, never having been in the series before (When Leo explains why, he makes the obligatory UPN Buffy joke "vampires are part of a different network", something like that). The Phoebe character is the only recurring character with actual martial arts skills.

I love Buffy, so I thought I'd try Charmed. I watched about 5 episodes, and they all had something to do with evil warlocks trying to steal their powers. Yawn.

Haunches,

I've never thought Charmed was a ripoff of Buffy. Buffy is way darker and has much better writing than Charmed (though I watch Charmed more than Buffy). Vampires aren't a regular occurence in Charmed...they fight all sorts of demons and monsters.

Funny thing is, Charmed regularly beats Buffy in the ratings.

Though I prefer Charmed with Shannon..... the new Charmed is still good.
