R3 (Korean) Releases of Ruscico DVDs?
These R3 DVDs look like they are sourced from Ruscico. Has anyone bought any of them and can comment on the DVD's content and quality?

I asked around and apparently for the most part they are the exact same as the Russico discs, just Region 3 and liscened to Spectrum for sale in Korea. I'll be picking up Dersu Uzala and Stalker for sure...

...weird... these DVDs are a lot cheaper when ordered from Korea than when ordered direct from the Ruscico site... weird...

With prices averaging $30 for a licensed disc, DVDs in Russia are exclusively marketed to the riches. Not really weird after all. Fortunately, Ruscico still has to sell their product internationally, and they probably realized there is no way Koreans would be willing to pay as much... Having said that, Rublyev and Solaris are a bargain for $19 a piece. I just wish there were more of them released in Asia.

...well... I broke down, finally, and ordered the three-disc(!) Dersu Uzala - which will be shipped from Canada... one of these days... I guess... ( = first time I have anything to do with PayPal, whatever that is - he said, fearing the worst...)

Hendrik, assuming you actually opened a PayPal account you should be fine.
I never had any problem with krdvd but then I'm in Canada so I don't have to deal with customs issues. Trigger mentionned that krdvd sometimes ships out of Korea but that never happened to me, all my shipments from them were sent from Canada.
And... Let us know your thoughts on this release of Dersu Uzala when you've had a chance to watch it!

...SURPRISE!!!... well, a little surprise, anyway: yesterday the postman brought me a smart little package from Canada containing the Spectrum DVD release of Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala...
...ok... the specs:
° two AMARAY-type keepcases in a slipcase = nice
° keepcase 1 (the kind with a flap for the second disc)
contains the 'Original Version' spread out over two DVD-9 discs
(Disc One: 11 Chapters, 67'37'' / Disc 2: 11 Chapters, 68'25'')
- Audio: Russian DD 5.1, English DD 5.1
- Subtitles: Korean, Russian, English
- Region coding: 3 (Korea!)
- NTSC
- Transfer: anamorphic, 2.35:1
- (both discs are 'picture discs' with different pictures = very nice)
- disc starts with the Spectrum DVD logo
followed by the usual RUSCICO logo
...I haven't actually watched the movie, but did skip through it to get an 'impression'... print seems fine, not as 'pristine' as some of RUSCICO's releases, but pretty good... sound is as usual (I'm no fan of 'souped-up' mono soundtracks, but confess that RUSCICO do a pretty damn good job of it most of the time)...
° keepcase 2 contains the 'American Version' on one DVD-9 disc
(20 Chapters, 141'06'')
- Audio: Russian DD 1.0 mono, English DD 1.0 mono
- Subtitles: Korean, English
- Region coding: 3 (Korea!)
- NTSC
- Transfer: letterbox, 2.35:1
- (another 'picture disc' with a different picture = very nice)
- disc starts with the Spectrum DVD logo
followed by the movie
...interestingly, the 'American' version is some 5 minutes longer than the 'Original' one (141'06'' vs. 136'02'')
...all in all a lovely package - and considerably cheaper than if I'd ordered the Russian release...
...plan to watch the movie over the weekend...

...forgot to mention: 'Original Version' includes an 8-page booklet - in Korean... ...
...Disc 1 includes "Making of the film", photo gallery, Interview with Vladimir Arseniev (one of two Russian writers)
...Disc 2 includes Interview with Yuri Solomin (actor), cast & crew info
...loverly, loverly, loverly!

Ahhh goody goody. Might have to pick it up then and by the time I get it, Hendrik, the cunning linguist that he is, will have done the Korean to English translation of the booklet.
Hendrik, I assume that the making-of and the interviews have english subs?

Take a look at this site: http://www.spectrumdvd.com/shopping/...vd&n_ctg=russi
It appears that Spectrum is getting all Ruscico releases (well, almost) including the ones planned for the next year.
FYI: this site http://www.dvd.co.KR has much better prices on Ruscico films than krdvd.com, but it has no English interface and shipping will probably kill the deal, anyway.

I'm in Hong Kong so its cheaper for me as I am in Zone 1.
They go by weight.
If your in Zone 3 N.america/Europe, then the prices for standard airmail is:
0.3 kg 7,170 = US$6
0.5 kg 10,370 = US$8.6
1.0 kg 18,000 = US$15
1.5 kg 23,000 = US$19.1
2.0 kg 28,000 = US$23.2
2.5 kg 33,000
3.0 kg 38,000
3.5 kg 42,000
4.0 kg 46,000
4.5 kg 50,000
... and so on
I ordered 6 DVDs
dersu Ursula is 3 discs + thick book!
Solaris is 2
Andrei is 2
Christmas is 1 + CD
Love letter is 1 + CD
Grand Illusion 1
This order was classed as 2kg or under.
If you order the same DVDs as me then your order will work out at roughly twice that much of HK shipping per DVD which sounds about right.

Re: the sound of Dersu Uzala
Hendrik, I believe this is not a souped-up mono soundtrack, but taken from the original discrete six channel soundtrack. I've been waiting for a release including this since I bought the Criterion LD years ago.
Can you comment on the picture quality on the Ruscico version vs the American version? Also, differences in the versions (unless it is just the differences between a conversion from a PAL master and an original NTSC transfer)? I have the PAL Ruscico-version, but I might have to go for this Korean release as well.

Probably that 8 page Korean booklet tells us what the differences are... Korean speakers wanted!
