when watching dvds on a stereo tv, which audio track should I select: DD 5.1 or DD 2.0

You want to use the 2.0 option. That is for two channels of sound (ie stereo - left and right) versus 5 channels (plus a "bass" channel). The sound in 5.1 is not mixed properly for a stereo TV.

^ Yes. Even though the 5.1 soundtrack would be combined into 2 channels for your t.v., always go with a dd 2.0 or pro logic soundtrack with a stereo t.v., when available.

I take it there is no stereo system with a decoder and it's a normal stereo TV without special DD 5.1 hookups.

If that is the case, there is no need to select either. When you select an audio track from your DVD player it's decoding the signal to be processed by the system that has the DD or DTS decoder. The DD 5.1 is for systems with separate surround channels for each surround speaker (that's the 5) and a subwoofer (that's the .1)

It sounds like you have your DVD player directly connected to your TV. In that case the normal L/R audio will be reproduced by the stereo TV.

I don't know if this answers your question. Maybe someone can explain it better...

In my experience the 5.1 always sounds more dynamic then the 2.0. 2.0 is never any good and should be replaced by a decent PCM track. That's just me though
