R3 Total Recall DTS
It appears that the Korean version has a DTS track.
Anybody seen the R3 version?
I'm thinking that the dts may not be much of an improvement over the R1 DD5.1 because it's an old movie.

I doubt it.
It's sold on reputable sites such as dvd.co.kr and dvdtitle.co.kr, places which pulled the pirated Indy Jones dvds off the shelves once it was discovered that they were pirated.
Besides, it's not unheard of to hear about r3 dts versions of dvds not available in r1, e.g., Buena Vista Social Club and Heat.

I have received this Korean R3 Total Recall this morning in work. The cover image above cannot reveal how the package looks like. The front cover is in 3D!!! You have to see it to believe. I think it's the best packaging so far for Total Recall. I'll report later the video and audio quality. I also have the R1 Tin can Total Recall. I think I can compare these two versions.
Thanks to gopeglegs! to point this DVD out.
BTW, I ordered from www.koreandvds.com and the same order has Peacemaker DTS, Friend UE, Samurai Fiction, and Three Colors Triology.

Interesting! Thanks for mentioning Buena Vista, I was thinking of purchasing the DVD-A, but the DTS DVD is more appealing.
Do R3 DVDs have permanent captions or can you turn them off? Maybe someone should start a list of DVDs with permanent captions? That would be helpfull. I wouldn't buy any.

According to tracking info, I should get mine today (Korea)!
I got the 3 colors and Friend, too! Also got the Buena Vista Social Club dts, Heat dts, and some more non-dts titles. Unfortunately, I can't really comment on video or sound 'till I get back to DC next week.

You have any software DVD players? If you have WinDVD or PowerDVD you can check the information boxes in either program and it will tell you what the video and audio bitrates are.
Not sure if any standalone players actually give you that sort of information, but there must be a few.

I can display bit rate with my dvd deck, I just don't know how many bits usually appear for full bitrate dts dvds. Of course I can compare with other dts dvds.

I bought this last month and I can confirm the DTS is a very good soundtrack although whether it is it better than DD5.1 is hard to say as thats pretty good too.
I bought it because I always hated the Tin and the cover on this Korean version is a slipcase with amaray inside.
The picture is the same as the French Studio Canal release and its very good if not better than the R1 artisan.

As I'm not home, I can't use my system to check and have to use my dad's system, but I switched between dd and dts for the scene where there's the first gunshots and what appears to be the bit rate as displayed on the screen appears to be roughly the same for both dts and dd for this particular scene (varying between 6~8)
The dts version does sound a bit louder, I think.

DTS 5.1 at 768 Kbps is half bitrate.
There are a number of different variables as to what makes an audio track sound good, including bitrate, source material, the mix, environment, etc.
On my stereo DTS even at half-bitrate sounds better than a full-bitrate DD track, although it can be close if the DD mix is done well. A good DTS mix at the full bitrate, no contest.
Anyone know why DTS releases seem much more popular in other regions?
