Question about THX dvd movies and THX select receivers

Do THX select receivers make THX digitally mastered DVD movies sound better? Or is it all just a big gimmick.

Will I hear a difference if I play a THX movie with a non THX select receiver compared to when playing on THX select receiver?

You do not need a THX receiver to listen to a THX soundtrack.

THX is a certification for soundtracks, equipment, theaters and now even car systems. It just says the labeled product meets THX's standard for this kind of product.

There's no such thing as a THX sound mix. THX supervises the mastering process of whatever Dolby Digital and dts sound mixes that are provided to the DVD authoring facility. Theatrically, supervises the installation, calibration and maintenance of the projection and sound equipment.

There is such a thing as THX processing in some THX-certified equipment, but it has nothing to do with the actual mixes used on the DVDs themselves. dts, however, has been accused of cooking some mixes to make them sound different from their Dolby Digital counterparts.
